How do you make friends?

So I was just wondering how everyone else makes friends? Do you just talk to someone and then eventually become friends, or do you wait until someone talks to you and then if you think they're friendly you try to keep the relationship going?
I'm just wondering because looking back, I never really talked much but everyone always seemed to think of me as friendly (not that I'm not friendly, it's just that even people who I never even talked to thought of me as friendly lol). I think the reason was because of social media. Usually if I want to be friends with someone, I will try looking for them on facebook or something. Adding them seemed to make both of us feel less like strangers and a bit more comfortable so eventually we're able to form some sort of friendship. If not, then I usually just try to make myself noticeable to them by like sitting close to them in class or something like that and hoping that eventually they'll recognize me. Since I usually don't talk much, this is how I usually tend to make friends lol
So how do you usually go about with making friends? Not really looking for advice on how to make friends, just wondering lol :)

But I guess in school the whole friends thing is a bit odd its just how we are as humans and getting along or through the day is easier maybe as well as the social aspect.
I just have a small number of friends but am friendly to all. Maybe some through a shared interest or just the usual lot on sports teams.

That's a good question. I think ya just start doing things with other guys or girls or whatever and let things just develop.

I wait til someone comes up to me. I'm extremely shy for a girl who's performed on stage in front of 600-1000 people. Luckily I tend to attract more outgoing friends so it's not hard for me to join in conversations because they never shut up lol

I just try to find people I have many things in common with.

If there is classmate who I see everyday that I find interesting, I just get the courage to walk up to them to know them more. Sometimes we end up friends, other times it doesn't work out. It's fine.

If I see someone at school with a nintendo ds or something I talk to them because I play video games and at least I opened myself that way to them.
