View Full Version : Disabled Rep?

The admins used to have disabled rep power and I was wondering if any other member could request that.
Your Rep Power would be 0, your Rep Points wouldn't matter (so on the member's list when you sort from greatest rep, you would be on the bottom of the list), you couldn't affect anyone's rep power, and they couldn't effect yours. It's like it doesn't exist for you. But when it's activated again it goes back to how it was.
I was wondering if admins would make exceptions for that. Maybe we could have it to where anyone can request having this done through PM.

I'm curious as to why someone would want to do this? Maybe there's an obvious answer that I'm missing, but just wondering.

Why did Francis do it? Why did the admins do it?
I would want it gone so I don't have to think about it or worry about it or pay attention to it.
Disabling it wouldn't really affect anything. Except you couldn't modify my Rep. Big deal
Here's a question for you: why not do it?

I'm not entirely sure if we should be doing it with requests, as that could become a massive duty to keep up with. I believe Francis and Josh did it because we were beta testing it, and by the time we agreed to keep it, I'm sure they forgot about it.

By the time VT started using it, I was in the middle of being gone. (...I think. That's the only thing that makes sense. :P)

Well I know that its a fact that its possible for individual members to turn it off. Its just up to the admins if they will.

Reputation started being widely used after I left VT. That's the only explanation that would make sense.

Quite true. In the past like 6 months there's been a huge spike in rep usage. Note all the threads in TWPR that are suddenly occurring constantly that people are getting so irritated with

why would it be a massive duty to keep up with? Would that many people not want a chance have a lot of rep?
Val: what are you trying to say to me? Who were you talking to?

I was responding to Francis's post above mine.

It's easier the way it is. I don't see any reason why is should be disabled for some members.

How is it easier?
I'll give up this argument but I am curious as to why it's easier.
what is my reason why it should be disabled? we wouldn't have to deal with it.

Well... if they disabled it wouldn't matter right??? Does rep even do anything???

Reason: they do not want to deal with it.
...you don't really have to 'deal with' rep at all. You can give it or not, receive it or not. That's pretty much it.

I was not answering my own question. Those two sentences are two different tangents.
So, deal with: you don't have to look at it or think about it or anything. It's like it's disabled. It's like PMs. And PMs are more vital, so why can't we have rep disableable too?
And I challange how it is easier. I don't see how it's easier...

To disable reps for people would mean an administrator would have to go into the users profile and disable it individually. Now if we offered that option what we would have is constant PM's asking to disable it then put it back on and then disable it again. This is too much hassle for what it is worth.
If you don't like the reputation system or to use the system then its just simple don't use it. That sounds harsh but it is the reality of it.

I've generally found that forums are better off without rep for everyone. It's mostly pointless and people tend to abuse it a lot more than use it for it's real purpose. Use the person's post as a merit of them, not the green bars.

Well abuse of nearly anything can happen anywhere.. And the severity of abuse varies in communities.. I don't think there is much potential for that in VT..
Though yes ''Use the person's post as a merit of them, not the green bars.'' I agree with that 100%
