I've never really used a combination of pads and tampons at the same time when I'm on my period. So far, I've never really had what I would call a heavy flow so depending on what I'm wearing, I usually use one or the other!
I've heard that you become too dried out (whatever that means) and I've also heard that it's way too uncomfortable! Of course, having my period is not that comfortable, anyway!
I'm just kinda wondering what y'all girls take is on this!

I'd say one or the other not both. They're designed to work independently so shouldn't have a need for both. Now if you seem to have an issue with just one, there's nothing wrong with using both.
Personally, I've never had a leaking problem just using a tampon.

I literally have no idea what the drying out bit is supposed to mean LOL
It's probably fine? Just remember to change often. I personally have menorrhagia so I have to combine at times, but if you've never really had a heavy flow, it shouldn't be an issue.

Drying out happens when you use incorrect tampons for your flow, say for instance you are having a light day and you use a heavy flow tampon it can hurt taking it out because ther e isn't any moisture in your vagina.

I do not like how tampons feel, so I don't use them at all. To me they're very uncomfortable even when they're put in right, and I don't like the idea of having one in me. I just use a pad.
I only wear a tampon if I'm going swimming, but I'll usually sit out anyway

I also use pad as I don't like how tampons feel. I carry extra pads in my purse for a fresh change.

When I first started my period back when I was 12 I would have a heavier flow and my cramps were horrible. I hated my period so much and had to use both a tampon and pads. Now since I have been on The Pill my flow is less and my cramps are much better so most of the time I just have a tampon in.

I have been having my period for a year now and mine really hasn't been the bad. I mostly only wear pads, but I have worn a tampon in a few occasions.
