Personally I don't think it sounds gay. Me and my (very, 100%) straight friends used to talk about it all the time. It's just guy talk. He's pretty much guaranteed to do it, though if you want to know how often you'll have to ask.

I can understand that it could be misinterpreted as lead into to doing together which may prompt the "what are you gay or did you think I was gay?" reaction. If you want to make it seem less likely that you're heading in that direction maybe introduce the subject with a straight reference so for example "Have you seen how big sarah's tits are getting. Every time I see her it makes me so hard and as soon as I get home i have to j/o. Do you find that?" Once you've broached the subject you can ask more detailed questions.

First, you have to talk about yourself, how you do it, or stories that you could share to him relating to masturbation. Then, you ask him if he does it too, or whatever you want to ask him about. Just don't be too eager. Make sure you're both comfortable, and don't hesitate or be nervous, because otherwise you might appear gay to him, and there's a chance that'll creep him out.

ok, i've had the very same problem! what i did was that one day he came over to my house, so i told him we should go on a walk... when we were walking i asked him if he ever jerks off... he told me no, and that it didnt call his attention to do it, so that was the end.
