can someone explain when you have to select a major in college? can you go through college and NOT have a major? It's still far off for me but i can't imagine deciding on one main thing to study since i want to study everything.

Usually you have to select your major by the beginning of your third year (Junior year) of college. You can basically go the first two years without a major because those years will be spent mostly in General Ed courses anyways. However, you can not graduate undeclared. A major must be indicated on you diploma, and most people who don't know what they want to major in usually end up in Political Science or Business Management as those are easiest to obtain. If you really want to study more than one thing, you can double major or double minor.

Well it kinda depends which road you're taking. If you're just going to community college and trying to get your associates, the sooner you know what you want to get your degree in the better. If you plan on transferring to a 4 year, in most cases (at least in California), you need to complete certain classes to be eligible to transfer into a major; so again, the sooner you figure it out, the better.
If you're following the "traditional" path of going to a 4-year college or university, as Jake pointed out, they will ask you to figure that out by your junior year as the first two years are primarily just general ed classes.

In my school you need 60 credits to declare a major.
