How can you tell if somebody likes you?

There's someone in my year who I like but we only ever really talk about school and University plans.. I don't really know how to start talking about anything else without being too intrusive. Also if you only do talk about school/university related things does it imply that she doesn't have any interest in my personal life?

Honestly, you've given no reason for us to think she might like you. I've never had a problem figuring out if someone likes me. Usually they'll make eye contact, flirt, and just generally be especially nice. However, if she's hiding it you might never know. If you want to know, ease into the topic and talk about it. You could start by asking if she has a boyfriend or anything and just push the conversation along in the direction you want. Good luck!

If she is into you, you will know. I don't understand how can some guys be so unaware of girls who like them, it seems impossible to miss that... girls will usually give really obvious signs. Extremely long eye contact, physical contact, initiating convos or activities, looking for you, constant glances, smiling more than usual, laughing at things that aren't funny etc. etc. Someone can just be overly friendly but if a girl messages you first really often or asks you out she's probably into you because she wouldn't want to hang out with people she doesn't like...

First, you are not alone in misinterpreting signs. There was a girl that I liked that would always give me hugs, and always talked with me, but when I asked her out she brushed me aside for another guy. Sometimes if you just start a conversation with her, and just ask her a question like, have you this show or this movie? You could even ask her friends what she likes to do, and talk with her about that.
