View Full Version : Philosophy and the modern Ignorance of it

Philosophy is looked at by some as a boring class they have in which they are forced to read confusing books by people who lived thousands of years ago and don't apply to the modern life. Why is this? Such a wonderful science has fallen victim to a lazy society that is conditioned to learn things, but to not see the true, applicable, and practical value of what they're learning. Philosophy is also largely based on opinion that stems from the basic virtues and wisdom of humanity. Perhaps, with so many people in the world, there are so many different opinions that we are simply engulfed by the vast amount of opinions and ideas. Confidence in philosophy and our minds needs to increase. It's declined so quickly throughout recent history. We need to focus more on our own minds rather than other people and their opinions. However, this is just my opinion. Perhaps I can spark some interest in philosophy within your mind. Just to take a deeper look and perhaps encourage others to take a deeper look into this increasingly important subject. You can discuss anything about philosophy in this post as a response. Just thought I'd share some inspiration.

Part of philosophy is ethics. Learning ethics might cause an immoral man's conscience to act up, thus it is not popular today.

I'd have to agree with this.
I took a "philosophy class" last semester but it was more about ethics and morality, why abortion is this and that. I know I;m ignorant but why do people even care? If someone chooses to abort, then just let them I don't understand the fuss over the matter.
Another thing we discussed in lecture was about comparing things that had a right to life, severely mentally retarded human adult vs new born infant vs normal human adult. This lead to must confusing readings / texts about why one of these type of living things are categorized as sure they can die who cares ie (SMRA), and that an infant has a more right to life than them because of the aspect of potentiality.
Then we talked about affirmative action, another topic that I had no opinion on/about, it was just boring and stupid. Yes .. I know it is my ignorance driving that remark, but obviously this world is racially divided and people are constantly subjugated to racial profiling for certain job positions, if you don't get a certain position its not the end of the world, you can always try at another profession or at another job offering and mean time just do whatever job there is to feed yourself and your family.

Because there are reasons for regarding murder as morally wrong.

I agree with Rainbow Dash.
I took a "philosophy class"
In primary school we did philosophy classes too, every Thursday. We just read through this book and discussed the ideas in it and I found it very interesting and enjoyable. I love philosophy and I think it needs to be something learned and studied worldwide, which isn't done enough these days. Philosophy is so important to everyday life, it helps us to be able to address and understand and discuss the problems we are encountering all the time. About the modern ignorance of it, philosophy is definitely an important area in life that needs not to be ignored, but to be appreciated and known.

I always thought of it as philosophy and the study of it can help an immoral man to build himself up and learn from wise people.

Immoral men tend to not want to desist from immorality though. Our culture encourages immorality, thus philosophy is not popular. To be clear, I don't approve of this, and wish it were more popular, but that is why it is unpopular.

Much like other social sciences, people fail to see that these things are skills for life that apply to everything. It's a shame, really, but that is the way society sees it. But then again, who gives a damn what society thinks?

Anything typically attributed to academia - philosophy included - tends to be less popular in today's society, especially among young people. It's always been that way, though. If we were going by ratio, I'd say more people are interested in philosophy today than ever before. A few hundred years ago, the majority lower class wouldn't even know what philosophy was. Today, I see homeless men leafing through mass-market Hegel on the corners downtown, and precocious teenagers working their way through mass-market Nietzsche.
Okay, let's discuss philosophy. Anyone else here into literary analysis? How do we feel about the written word? I'm of the same mind as Sartre: writing is entirely removed from other forms of art, and poetry is completely different than regular writing because it treats words as microcosmic objects rather than symbols.

I started reading Nietzche but stopped due to school. I could countinue reading him, despite having to fry my brain to comprehend what he meant. If I was reading English version it would be a lot easier.

Philosophy requires a level of thinking, consideration, and openness that I don't think everybody is either capable of doing very well, or people don't want to learn about it because they are predominantly closed minded people. I've taken a few philosophy classes, and enjoyed them quite a lot. I think everybody should take at least an intro level philosophy class -- it can teach valuable thought processes and ways of thinking that you may have not considered or have ever practiced before.

Philosophy is also avoided because of how immoral our society is. It would be hard for a public school teacher to talk about ethics when her audience is only there because they are forced to be there and that she is paid because her student's parents are forced to pay for her. It would be hard for her to talk about ethics and morality when the state propaganda she teaches would be questioned by her students.
