View Full Version : iffy red text

I've recently seen a text with an OP including some rext text such as this with a moderator message of "Red text may only be used by moderators" or something like that.
Is this rule new? Because I've posted countless times in red text including in this subforum.
Rule changes like this seem a little iffy to me. :what:

As far as I'm aware, I don't think that rule is new. When you mean this subforum, you mean Virtual Teen HQ?

Not that I know of, it's been a rule for quite awhile. It's just very likely that the staff haven't had a chance to view the thread and therefore wouldn't be able to edit to standard colored text. I've seen that, and many other rule breaking occurrences that the staff took maybe a week to notice. (No offense). You have to understand that the staff is very very busy every day here, and off of VT. There's tons of threads made, and not only threads but also members individually that keeps the mods occupied.
Overall, mods are very busy. And, it's very easy to accidentally skip a thread.

It's not really anything that's a big deal - it would be hard pressed to actually issue a personal warning for using it. It is common practice, though, for staff members to use red text when leaving notes or warnings on posts or in threads.
I don't really think it's a big deal to use colors in posts for emphasis of a few words (as opposed to whole paragraphs or posts, which become a pretty big eyesore).
The reason it's not in the FAQ (though don't be surprised if it may be added) is because, like I said - it's more of a common practice thing than a firm rule. Most members know when they see the red text that it's a staff member's note.

You are more than welcome, though, to report any post you might think is breaking the rules and a moderator will look into it as soon as they can. :)

Ah okay.
I was referring to the ROTW forums because I remember having used red text there, but if there's no warning for it or whatever it makes sense I didn't realize there was a rule for it.
And I totaly get you guys have a lot of moderating to do; there's only a handful of ya for the whole forum :P

Well, if it's only a few words and it's for the sake of emphasis we just let it slide, but a whole sentence/couple lines would most likely be edited.

The general rule of thumb regarding the use of red text is that if you're using it to highlighted a few words or make a small statement stand out then the moderators aren't going to really give any kind of reminder. However if you're making massive posts or paragraphs in red then they're likely to give a little reminder.
Back when I was a mod that was the general rule we followed and it was never strictly enforced and as far as I'm aware I don't think we've ever actually given any infractions or warnings for it, at least when I was on staff back in 2013.

I remember the general rule when I was a mod was that users were not technically supposed to use red text just so when a moderator posted a note, you knew it was a mod. However, sparingly was not much of a problem and not that common anyway at the time. If someone was doing a whole post in like bold red text, I know I politely mentioned in my note that moderators preferred to keep that type of text for moderation purposes and most people were like "oh okay, I won't do that then".
I never gave a serious warning or infraction for red text. It was more just a hey, help us out and make it easier for mods to edit posts without people thinking it's just some random user. But it's not strictly enforced so to speak. If a mod asks you not to, it's just 'cause it makes the job easier and they'd appreciate it if you didn't use it. It's more a courtesy thing than a rule.
If say, you were highlighting a sentence in ROTW to counter it or whatnot, I'd assume that would be left alone. I never moderated GD but I've never seen anyone get into trouble over it.
In general, font colours were also discouraged because of the fact we have multiple themes and if you use white on a dark theme it looks great but for users like me who use lighter themes, you can't read it. Again, not a rule but something widely acknowledged as not a good idea.

Yeah most people don't even use colored text unless their doing a survey, and even then it seems like it's just for contrast to the questions. Although, when I see a mod note, they usually leave their name. For example:
"Post edited. ~ (mod name here)"
So, making text red shouldn't be that much of a problem, but I agree it's sort of annoying to look at.

I think that's a good way to do it. Say the post was edited, say why (if necessary), and the mod name.
If I have a post, say "England vs Scotland" and want to put "England" in red as part of patriotism, that should be fine. I think most people could tell "England" written in red by a non-mod vs a note from a mod.

naw it has been a rule for awhile. we can do it in the journal section (at least I do. if that is wrong, sorry about that), but they do it so, as the mods have stated, it is easy to identify when they write something

Well like a few mods said. It's not really a rule, just more of a guideline and a request that users don't use it as it's a very nice and effective color font mods can use when moderating. Also I don't believe it's a rule in the diary's and such. As it doesn't affect our post count, or anything really and diary's can be used for fun if desired.
