View Full Version : Really? 4,000 chemicals in one cigarette?

I seriously have a hard time believing this. If there was 4,000 confirmed chemicals in one cigarette, people would just die from one puff. Not to mention smokers who are addicted and smokes several packs a day. What are your opinions on this?

RECIPE FOR A CIGARETTE The Big List In the 4000 chemicals in cigarette tobacco, there are 43 known carcinogens. Some will be detailed as to what they are used for in the box below this huge listing of ingredients & additives for cigarettes. The lungs of smokers, puffing a daily ration of 20 to 60 low to high tar cigarettes, collect an annual deposit of one-quarter to one and one-half pounds of the gooey black material, amounting to a total of 15 to 90 million pounds of carcinogen-packed tar for the aggregate of current American smokers. Why are cigarettes with these deadly ingredients still not regulated or banned in spite of over 450,000 deaths from smoking per year in this country alone? And how many people has saccharine killed? Ammonia: Household cleaner Angelica root extract: Known to cause cancer in animals Arsenic: Used in rat poisons Benzene: Used in making dyes, synthetic rubber Butane: Gas; used in lighter fluid Carbon monoxide: Poisonous gas Cadmium: Used in batteries Cyanide: Deadly poison DDT: A banned insecticide Ethyl Furoate: Causes liver damage in animals Lead: Poisonous in high doses Formaldehiyde: Used to preserve dead specimens Methoprene: Insecticide Megastigmatrienone: Chemical naturally found in grapefruit juice Maltitol: Sweetener for diabetics Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs Methyl isocyanate: Its accidental release killed 2000 people in Bhopal, India in 1984 Polonium: Cancer-causing radioactive element So where did you hear that cigarettes are harmless? Think about the above "toxic waste dump" next time you have an urge for a cigarette. Ahhhh! Won't your lungs feel goooood?! Chrisco Internet Marketing, © 1995-2002 All Rights Reserved.

"Chemicals" aren't bad...sugar is a chemical. Everything is chemicals. Your chair is made of a lot of different chemicals but that doesn't make it deadly.

It's the carcinogenic nature of the chemicals in cigarettes that makes them dangerous.

thats cool but what about the people you smoke around why do they have to lose their lives to feed your habit (not saying your a smoker)

I am a smoker, and I only do it around other smoking friends, I dont want to affect my friends who dont wish to be affected, its just common decency

just because you smoke around others that smoke doesn't neccessarily mean your not effecting those that don't smoke. At my school there's an area right outside that all the kids who smoke go to before, during, and after school to smoke but everyone no matter where they are on campus you can smell the smoke coming from the tree. That smell effects everyone and hurts everyone.

And off the subject why don't you care about how long you live? I know living to a hundred is ridiculous but think of all the things you could be doing in those minutes you're blowing away smoking. You could even become a millionaire or something in that time :)

Hauptmann Kauffman

The smell doesnt affect anything, its the smoke. And Im not going to become a millionaire in the last year of my life. Even if I did, what would the point be to that?

Dolphus Raymond

I don't really have an ethical problem with smoking as long as it doesn't affect others - in unpleasant smell or especially secondhand chemicals. I also don't think anyone who has a dependent child should be frivolous about reducing their lifespan like that. And doing things when you're young will affect you later on...I don't smoke because I don't want my kids' dad to die any younger because he did something when he was 18.

But if you feel that the affect of a lesser lifespan on those around you isn't as big of a deal as enjoying a semi-risky activity...I guess I can't have a huge issue with that. I guess.

Yuri, I think he was referring to doing things now, rather than in those extra years. I think he's saying you could be doing something more productive than smoking. You could focus on something else and possibly be a more successful person. Do something positive rather than just spending hours upon hours just smoking and smoking. And I do have to admit that I hate the smell. I hate 90% of people that smoke too. Because at my school all the people who smoke [openly/out in public at least] are assholes who flunk school, often get suspended, hurt other people, etc. They do all this because they think it makes them cool. It doesn't. There's this one kid in my geometry class who's flunking school, gets suspended a lot, hurts other people [emotionally and physically] and smokes whenever he has the oppurtunity, but from what I've discovered, he can be a really nice guy, and though he's failing every class, he actually is extremely intelligent, he would just rather smoke and do drugs than study and do well in school.

I used to smoke cigarettes. I eventually stopped to impress a girl, then decided not to pick the habit back up. honestly, I thought I enjoyed smoking... not the case. Its a total hassle, especially if your parents can't find out. I also stopped because I learned that only 4% of people who start, stop. That is the scariest part to me.

DT, yes it is, and its also just like someone who habitually drinks soda after school, or constantly eats their favorite food. Its doing something because it feels good.

anyways umm yes these chemicals are "bad" for you. they kinda speed up the deterioration of your body. yes it is little but people smoke alot so when they do smoke more than one cigerette it kinda adds up over the years...

Chances are, as a chain smoker one dies between 50 and 65, not 70. Maybe sooner. I know you arent a chain smoker, but please understand most of what we are saying doesnt apply to you if you dont smoke more than once a month. (post directed at yuri)

I seriously have a hard time believing this. If there was 4,000 confirmed chemicals in one cigarette, people would just die from one puff. Not to mention smokers who are addicted and smokes several packs a day. What are your opinions on this?

There's a commercial in the U.S. that rambles on about "the magical amount" and that cigarette companies put all these chemicals in to make them addictive, and in high doses some of the chemicals would be dangerous, but it's at the "magical amount" so it doesn't kill you. That's what the commercial said anyway
