So I wrestle, and I had to wrestle a girl tonight. Should wrestling be a separate gender sport? I'm a guy, by the way.

Wow, I kinda envy you man :P
But seriously? They are having you wrestle the opposite gender? That doesn't add up really, considering guys having more strength and girls being small with less strength (No offense).
I believe that it should be male vs mall and female vs female rather than female vs male. And for another obvious reason why, which I'm sure anyone can guess

i'd think if you're the same weight it wouldn't matter. she could easily have the same strength as you if she tried

I'm sure it won't be a problem if whoever organised the event is fine with it; however I can see how you'd feel a bit awkward as plenty of guys probably feel uncomfortable in potentially hitting a girl/woman.

Okay, let's look at something here shall we...
I'm 5'7", about 155lbs, and I can lift about half my own bodyweight a majority of the time. My mother is 5'3", about maybe 165lbs, and can barely lift 25lbs.
We're pretty much the same weight class. I am taller by a measly four inches. I am still significantly stronger than she is. (I'm not taking age into account here 'cause she's never been able to lift anything, she's always gotten me to do it even as a kid, not to mention this is purely hypothetical.) We're both women.
So actually, no, separating by gender makes no sense. For any type of one on one sport, what you should be taking into account is weight class and build and your ability level. I can take down my 15-year-old brother who is over six feet and heavier than me. But he's also built like a beanpole and just 'cause he's a guy doesn't mean anything.
You'd probably end up, after awhile, matching more like-gendered people as men started getting older and outgrowing most of their female peers but that still doesn't say much. It's a massive misconception that men are at all more physically inclined than women are. If you'd like me to go into the science behind it, I can, but I think that would just come off as harsh and unnecessary.
And what's your other reason? God forbid a girl and a guy touch one another?
(P.S. -and I mean this politely- but just because you say no offence doesn't make it unoffencive. Actually, it just implies that offence should be taken at all.)

I'm going to second lilg and Carmilla here. There's a wrestling club at my school and I know that there are a few girls in it (two or three?), all of whom are very capable of besting the boys. It depends on the people. If you're getting butthurt by getting beaten by a girl or your "chivalry" is getting in the way of hitting a girl, then it's your problem, not hers.

In high school a few friends of mine were on the wrestling team and maybe one or twice per season one or two of them would have to face a girl. Two times a girl beat one of them, each time it was a guy who was beaten, so it's not impossible.

Yeah I think that as long as they are in the same weight and "strength" (even though there is no such thing) category girls should still be allowed to wrestle with guys if they want to.

I'd feel weird doing it competively

It would depend on the people I would think.
The only boys I've wrestled are my brother and cousin, but just for fun, nothing serious.

I dunno. I mean, if she is talented and skilled enough to be on the team then why not. I have seen girls beat guys before

its not just about how strong you are though there is a degree of skill involved

Male biologically get bigger and stronger than females if both put in an equal amount of effort. At lower levels of sport this difference is so minute that it doesn't really matter, but at top proffesional levels it can make a big difference, that's why physical sports at that level are separated by gender.
Basically...
At the school level, physical sports don't really need to be separated by biological gender.
Only at the most competitive levels do physical sports need to be separated for the most fair possible environment.

No, because trust me, I know some pretty tough girls out there. One of the veteran trainers for my high school wrestling team was a girl. She could take me down pretty quick and I was probably a good 15-20 pounds heavier than her.

a kid on my schools wrestling team had to and totally got his ass kicked. I think if she can take training and practice she deserves to be on the team. thankfully there were never girls in my weight class when I wrestled HA

I agree, there is a girl in my school that wrestles and she is really good. She works out constantly and ended up being 3rd in state wrestling guys and girls. I think you may have an issue with gender roles. Not saying you do maybe something to look at.

Maybe it should be divided in gender. But if she wants to wrestle you, you should just accept and respect her as an equal opponent.

no it shouldn't, it should be divided by talent not gender
