View Full Version : Should I take AP Literature next year (senior year)?

I'm currently a junior and in AP Language, 3 honors, and 2 standard classes. Even though AP Lang is a heavy workload, I managed to end last semester with a 95 (A). I have to choose my classes tomorrow for senior year, and I honestly have no idea if I should take AP Lit or not. I've always wanted to have an easy senior year because I've worked so hard these past three years and have had straight A's all throughout high school (lowest grade I received was a 90 in physics honors). My weighted GPA has been 4.2-4.333 every semester of high school so far.
I'm honestly really undecided about AP Lit. I feel like senioritis will hit me and I won't feel like trying as much as I have these past 3 years. It's either I take 2 standard senior English electives or AP [along with 2 honors (Spanish IV and Pre-Calc) and 4 standard classes].
Help? Opinions on the class?

I'm also taking AP language this year, and I do plan on taking Lit next year. I've heard mixed reviews on English Lit, but mostly I think it'll depend on who your teacher is/what they're like. If they're "forgiving" in the fact that it's a senior English class when students are more concerned with colleges than writing an essay a week, I think you'll do fine - the class itself isn't any more or less difficult than AP Language, I don't believe. However, if you get a teacher who treats it like a demanding AP, then you'll probably find that you've made the wrong choice. Do you have any way of finding out who you might have as a teacher, and what they're like?
Good luck!

If you enjoy reading analytically you should absolutely go for it.

The AP Literature teacher is my AP Lang teacher's husband. Everyone says that they like him and that he's much better than the AP Lang teacher. I'm just concerned about the workload.

Take Lit, you're going to be so much better prepared for college, and when you come down to it the workload is manageable. I'm to n Lang and I'm looking forward to Lit.

I'm from England so it's different when you do A Levels here, but I did Lit for my first year (you have to do 4 and then drop one which I did) and whilst I didn't care for it at all (the teacher was 90% of it) the analytical skills and essay skills that are really develop help in so much subjects and just generally. It's kind of a gamble as to whether you'll enjoy it I guess, the teacher is a huge part (moreso than other subjects I find) as well as whether you enjoy the books or not.
It's not difficult as such, but a good teacher, books you're interested in etc. really help. I got pretty much close to full marks all the time up until A Level (the lowest I ever got was where I dropped like 8 marks or something like that), but for my AS exam I got a C. The teacher wore me down so much and led me to lose motivation really. Ah well.

I would try to score as many college credits as i could before entering college. That way, you'll have less to do.
