So I watched a bit of the unveiling of Windows 10 yesterday at the press conference for it and was wondering, what do you guys think of it? are you excited for it or not really interested in it? do you think it could be a flop for Microsoft as windows 8 didn't win over the consumer base. Also what is your opinion on the new Hololens they are working on, it actually looks really cool.

Wait... what? Was there a Windows 9 or did they just skip that number?

I hope it will be good, much better than the joke that 8 was, and did I hear correctly it will be free?
Jo, they did skip 9 because, I have no idea why.

I honestly don't know why they skipped windows 9, I guess maybe they wanted to advanced to windows 10 instead for marketing purposes. I guess maybe since they had bad press on windows 8, they wanted to advanced right to a 10 so it couldn't be compared to windows 8.

You heard correctly on that, it'll be free for a year to all windows 8.1 users the first year then after that it will be free for all windows 7 users for a year. If I heard correctly.

The people who run Windows must be either dumb as a monkey, or high as fuck. They have Windows XP, Vista, 98, 95, 7, 8, 10. They apparently can't think it's confusing. I wouldn't be surprised if the next one would be called Windows 29ja8292hso9 lmao xD

Windows 10 is the first correctly numbered Windows since like 3... Win8 was technically Win9...
But yeah. 10 looks rather good. It fixes some of the problems 8 had, and improves it a little bit more.
(This is going to get some backlash, I guarantee it...)
Personally though, I think 8 was a pretty good OS. Sure, the metro theme isn't all that great. But the open-ness of the OS was something we haven't seen from Windows in a while. It wasn't as open as Linux, of course, but it was pretty versatile... I honestly don't see why people hated it so much. But who am I to say? I am the guy with the most unpopular opinion...

Both I and Joe posted in a thread about this earlier: http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=215518
It's great. It fixes so many things they got wrong with Windows 8. I had it only for a few days, (Joe used it way more than I, but he's not here, unfortunately) but I really liked it (crashes aside). If you like, you could join the insider program and get the Win 10 technical preview.
I did not watch the unveiling but I should do so soon. Seems interesting!

They got their numbering wrong, somehow.
(1) Windows 1, (2) Windows 2, (3) Windows 3(.x), (4) Windows 95, (5) Windows 98, [-]Windows ME[/-], (6) Windows XP, (7) Windows Vista, (8) Windows 7, (9) Windows 8(.1), (10) Windows 10
Edit: Yeah, their motives were marketing fueled, with the same reasoning that the third iteration of the xbox console was Xbox One. Sounds cleaner.

I actually liked Windows 8.1, and installed that directly instead of Windows 8 at first. The differences between 8/8.1 are crazy when you're used to 8.1, when I bought my notebook.

I heard the reason they called it Windows 10 was because they were working on windows 9 it was to much like 8 so they scraped the whole thing and started over. Not sure how true that is though.

I agree I actually liked windows 8, I understand for some people they were use to the start button menu which was taken away from windows 8. I think if they had carried on with the start button with windows 8 but also allowed for the menu/tiled thing it would have probably worked out. I like Windows 8 but I do believe they had some major flaws with the system, hopefully windows 10 is actually a hit instead of a flop like windows 8 was.

Microsoft is following Apple's approach to releasing OS's. They're allowing everyone on Win7 and Win8/8.1 the chance to upgrade to Win10 for free as long as they do it within the first year. After that people can upgrade for free whenever a new OS is released. They're betting on the marketplace rather than OS sales. I'm guessing hardware manufacturers aren't too happy about it though. Instead of people buying a new PC to get Win10 people can just upgrade to Win10 for free.

I highly doubt that. Windows 10 may run fine on those high-end computers, but for those of us with lower power computers, it might. If someone upgrades to 10 from an early 8 machine, 10 should run. But if they really like 10, that would end up leading them to get a newer computer. Then the hardware manufacturers would still be happy.

It makes sense to me though, they have 10 main version of the OS so windows 10, essentially does make sense.

It's true. Just 'cause you get an OS for free, doesn't mean your computer can run it. I have a late 2011 Macbook and when Mavericks and Yosemite came out, I jumped on them. Mavericks ran just fine but Yosemite is having a few issues, probably because my computer is getting older and has also had a fair bit of work done on it recently.
Odds are, within the next couple of years, once a new OS comes out, I know it's not gonna run on my laptop so I'll probably spend the money to get a newer laptop with the new OS on it. So yeah, hardware companies are gonna be just as happy. Or, I may see about upgrading my computer just to run Yosemite properly since I'm a fan, just like Kacey used as an example.
Same works for Windows. I'm building a PC and I'm probably gonna stick with 8.1 or whatever the games I want run on but I might see about Windows 10 somewhere down the road. We'll see.

Technically, as previously stated calling it 10 is chronologically correct. However, the most commonly accepted reason is that they wanted to distance themselves from Windows 8 (and its negative connotations) as much as possible.

I have no clue on how OSX upgrades work, but since Vista came out there haven't been any significant higher requirements to use Windows computers; i.e. a Vista computer should run 7/8/8.1 just fine. I doubt that they would break that trend too much considering that Windows 10 is aimed to be a multi-platform OS. W10 is basically an upgrade of the somewhat light W8.1 anyways.

Windows and every piece of software that Microsoft makes is non-free software. Until Microsoft starts making software that respects my freedom, I will not use it. I'm already wary of using Skype for instant messages, why would I bother using an operating system that is locked down from me being able to view source code and change it as I wish?

I think Windows 10 will be a great release. They returned the start menu back and has few tricks Cortana. I do wish you could get rid the tiles on the start menu and just have it look just like Windows 7. But it's great that they are releasing it for free for just one year. After that you have to pay to get it. So I guess their message is get it while you can before you have to pay.

Wasn't Windows 10, originally Windows Blue? Either way, it's nothing more than an improved version of 10 with fixes and added features, nothing drastic. Or at least that's what I've read.

Windows 8.1 was supposed to be windows blue but it got scratched off and they went with 8.1 instead, I really don't understand why they did that considering the amount of flack with windows 8 they probably wanted to make sure this was a new addition to 8 but I think windows 8.1 backfired as well, they didn't do much different other then added what should have been a start button. But it only popped up with the windows 8 menu. So I think it didn't go over well.

I tried the technical view and it screwed up my laptop so bad that I tried going back to 8 but instead my laptop is unusable now, got too many bugs on it now.

My dad says WAIT on Win10 for at least the first 9 months so they can fix (apparently a lot) of security bugs. Microsoft is notorious for fixing security AFTER they release things. Mostly because security patches slow things down, and MS doesnt want users to have a bad first experience. Thats why a new PCs are really really fast at first, and then all the patches get pushed out which makes it slower.

I might test it out but if it's anything like 8 and 8.1 (all games unplayable) then I'll be keeping Windows 7.
they need to focus less on drenching the UI in unicorn vomit and make things work better under the hood. the integrated Siri clone is also creepy and not something I'd use.

That's why I never really do updates, I find they make my computer slower more then anything. I mean yes it's security patches which will stop many security concerns such as a hackers etc but it doesn't stop all hackers from getting in, it only delays them in a way but hackers always find a way around it. I did try windows 10 but right now they do have some bugs in it, cortana isn't even available in Canada as of right now which I'm sure a lot of Canadians would want to try that feature. But many bugs are in it plus it rewrites over windows 8, so if you do a system recovery you won't be able to get back to windows 8. You'll pretty much get stuck with windows 10 if you install it.

Depending on what your computer/laptop is, if you have an AMD processor don't bother because there's some conflicts with windows 10 and AMD right now. I noticed that when I installed it on mine, the AMD processor got disabled and noticed my laptop was lagging quite badly. Either way I think windows 10 will be good but it still needs some more time to fix out their bugs.

It's still much better than having even less protection.
But many bugs are in it plus it rewrites over windows 8, so if you do a system recovery you won't be able to get back to windows 8. You'll pretty much get stuck with windows 10 if you install it. Yes, the option to upgrade is unavailable (or at least AFAIK) but you always have the option to dual boot.

It's a stable operating system; why bother fixing something that isn't broken? Besides, Windows 7 has at least three more years of support from Microsoft for non-business usage, and about 90% of any critical bugs have been fixed.
