I was talking with my close female friend and we got on to the subject of spanking by our parents when we were younger and she was really shocked when I said I was still spanked by my mum (very rarely, only when I have done something horrendous), even though my periods/puberty started more than two years ago, so I wanted to find out others experiences of being spanked by their parents...

well in my area i dont think its sooo uncommon but people dont talk about it. I never would for sure! its embarassing. Plus most parents want other people to think their kids are all angels and stuff that they never admit any kind of punishment stuff. In southern midwest, people arent all "omg thats abuse!" like i read it other parts of the country. Again, people just dont talk about it.

It wasn't necessarily because id done anything terribly wrong, just because my dad can get very angry at things. I get things taken away or I'm grounded if I've actually done something wrong.

I've never been spanked, and I'm really glad I haven't. I think spanking a girl around puberty age is sexually humiliating. I've heard stories from girls I know where their dad's pull their pants and panties down to spank them bare bottom, exposing her pubic hair and vagina. That's so gross and wrong.

You seem to be from the UK. Thus 'spanking' is illegal if it leaves a red mark, and certainly the last comment is definitely child abuse.


There is never a reason to hit or humiliate your child, that shows a complete failure of parenting. How could you hit someone you love?

If you find yourself taking your anger and frustration at being a bad parent out on a defenceless child, seek help. That's their failure not the child's.

I hope when you all grow up, you take the pain and humiliation from these and ensure you never allow or inflict these acts upon your own children.

I hate the expression 'oh, but I needed or deserved it'. No. Never.

Communication is key, lay the healthy foundations and the discipline can all be verbal and privilege based.
