View Full Version : Issues Regarding Signatures

Ok, so I had a similar post awhile back about, raising the maximum character count for signatures. However that idea was obviously not going to work as some users can abuse the system with that. But I had a different idea. Not raising, or lowering the max character count, but possibly making the BB Code no longer count as characters. Such as the [/B ] , Fonts, colors, left side and right side.

[B]But obviously not the letter sizing.

Because if I want a certain font, and maybe bold, with some italics, it may take up too much room for the character count, to the point I can't have a detailed signature.
Basically what I'm saying is, have the BB Code no longer count, and keep the signatures just as they are, but are able to be more detailed, without abuse of the system. Because so far my max character limit is 550, but with the BB Codes, it may reduce it to 450. Hope y'all understand what I'm saying

If this can work I think is a marvelous idea. It is not increasing the amount of words/characters you can type, but allowing you to customize it. I did not even realize the BB code counted in the signature. it would def be a nice touch for it not to count as part of the already limited character count (not that I am complaining, I totally understand why it is at the limit it is)

Exactly my thoughts brotato! :D
But yea I think it would work because it's not going to make the signature bigger by any means, but you can detail it even more

As far as I know, that's not how it works. You have to write out the code obviously. So the only way around that would be to raise the character limit which is likely not going happen. BB code is not its own separate thing that can be filtered out. It takes up characters because you have to write it yourself and it's a part of the signature.

So I don't think this is possible. The admins/staff can correct me if I'm wrong but from what I know of coding, it's not something I've ever been able to do.

I actually just checked this setting, and it turns out there is a way. Basically there's one setting that says "limit including BB Code" and then "limit excluding BB Code" so the functionality is there. Right now I don't really have an opinion either way on the issue, but I don't think it's a bad suggestion, so I wouldn't say it's not out of the question that the limit excluding BB Code could be raised.

More hosts really need to have that option. It would make my coding life so much easier.

Well that sounds like good news, Steven!
So would you either, disable BB Code limit, or just raise the max limit?
Do you think you, Mike & Val could discuss this option? Id really like for this to be accepted. It'd make signatures more easy to use :)

Of course it'll get discussed, they all do, even if one person says no in the thread. We'll always talk it over as a whole. :)

(Sorry for triple post, my phone can't edit much)

Just curious, any word on this yet?

Honestly, after discussing this, it probably won't happen. Signatures are already super long as it is, and we really don't need to make them longer than they already are.

Well you see I'm not suggesting making signature's to be...bigger. Just enlarge the BB Code limit to add more details and creativity. Like your signature for example. You can have more color in it, than what the BB Code currently allows.

Wouldn't enlarging the BB Code Limit also enlarge the overall size? Hence, people not using the BB Code, could make bigger signatures?

Well there is a BB Code Limit I believe as either Mike or Stephen pointed out.

Ah, and that would be separate from the actual amount of text. Well that could work :)

Yea I believe it would. Besides I'd like to have more details on my signature so it might work

Well that would be cool! Hopefully it doesn't increase the overall size, and if there may be any other conflicting problems then oh well I guess, but good idea! :D

maniamsmart yep! I agree. Hopefully the staff likes the idea

While we could theoretically separately up the bbcode limit, we'd be making them larger than we're comfortable. The limit already increases at 2500 posts by 100 characters for bbcode and for overall characters. There's already 100 extra characters for bbcode characters which should be more than enough. You can always use bit.ly in your signature, which uses 14 characters instead of tinyurl which uses 19, or not shortlinking at all.

As I said above, we don't feel the need at this time.
