What would compel a 15-year-old girl and her 11-year-old sister to allegedly shoot to death their older brother?

Some mean treatment, they told police.

The older girl claimed her brother had beaten her and locked her in her room. When he fell asleep, she got a gun out of her parents' room and shot him, according to a police report obtained by CNN affiliate WJAX.

The 11-year-old allegedly assisted her, authorities said.

Both girls have been charged with premeditated murder and appeared in a Florida court on Wednesday. That hearing was closed to the media.

The parents, Keith and Misty Kornegay, appeared before a judge who told them they were being charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in state prison.

The judge set bond at $20,000, assigned a public defender to the case and told Keith Kornegay to have no contact with their children. Misty Kornegay was told she could have contact with the kids but only with state approval and supervision.

Ran away

The two inadvertently tipped off an officer to the Monday shooting, when they left their Columbia County home and walked to the town of White Springs nearly four miles away.

The 11-year-old called a friend's mother to tell her that she had run away. After the friend's mother arrived, she called police.

An officer came, and at first, the older girl played it cool, putting on makeup while answering some questions and dodging others, the report said.

But then she broke into tears and told the officer about her brother.

Body in living room

Police contacted the county sheriff. That evening, deputies went to the family's home to investigate. They found the 16-year-old boy's body on the living room floor.

The children's parents were out of town on a truck driving job, WJAX reported, but returned immediately when they received the news.

The three children and an additional 3-year-old daughter had been unsupervised. The toddler is now being cared for by a child protection agency.

The case is still under investigation.

While police have identified the girls, CNN is withholding their names since they are minors and have not been charged as adults.

In 2010, the Sheriff's Office visited the home on reports of vandalism and a civil matter, WJAX reported.

Honestly some things are just......wow

That's horrible...

The older girl claimed her brother had beaten her and locked her in her room.

I'm not sure if this is true but rest in peace to their older brother. It's devastating for a parent/parents to know that their son has been shot by their sibling. Then again, it's the parents responsibility to look out for their kids and their safety. I wonder how the sister knew there was a gun in her parent's room... whether it be the parents telling them. If it were that easy for a kid to get a hold of their gun, who knows what will happen in the future... that's not really smart of the parents. I wish for the best for these girls. The parents should have been aware of what was going on between the brother and his sisters for this to even happen.

This is so terrible. But why did the parents leave their 4 kids at home - one of whom was a toddler - with a gun in the house? Shouldn't they keep the gun locked away far away from the kids?

And wouldn't the parents have noticed a behavioural change in their children? Especially the son seeing as he apparently had beaten the daughter up and locked her in her room?

Same here. I'm thinking the same thing.
It's...devastating. I mean why did the parents leave the gun where the younger siblings could find it? I can understand if the older brother knew where it was, for obvious reasons. Maybe the parents also let the 15 year old daughter knew where it was? I'm 15 and know where all of our weapons and ammunition is.... The family may have been strong supporters of the 2nd amendment? Anyways I don't know all the details but my heart goes out to the family in this sad time.

God, this is awful. There are so many things I could rant about in this but just... wow.

If my brother didn't live so far away, I'd go hug him. My sister hates me but... not nearly that much.

I'm sure the 15 year old will spend some jail time and get punishment, which she deserves for her actions. However, the 11 year old sister/daughter might not for her extremely young age. I'm sure the parents will be the only ones in charge of her due punishment.

the parents might face some time themselves which I do not necessarily think is fair. the siblings is old enough to watch the baby (unless the parents expected them to do it days at a time) and if kids at the teens age really want access to the gun, they will be able to get it

Why did parents leave then at home? Well there were two teens so that's normal
The gun shouldn't have been accessible
Obviously more to it than they feel they can say

Holy crap people... Has the world gone mad? I'm not going to stereotype, but honestly, it seems like whenever someone gets mistreated slightly or abused or even just plan mad, the answer is to go fucking nuts and start shooting people. Like really? Your brother abuses you so tell your parens. They don't listen? Go to the police.... Some really disturbed people out there.

There seems to be more to this story than meets the eye.

It sounds a lot like he could have been molesting one or both of them. But I could be wrong.

Either way, he didn't deserve to die, and the baby didn't deserve to be left alone.

Plus, people leave 16 year olds home alone all the time, why are the parents even being charged??? I mean, maybe they should've removed the gun from the property somehow, but still.

If that had happened in Europe (most of it), parents would be charged for leaving underage kids without supervision, and for not keeping firearms in a locked and secure place. If you want to be "the most free country in the world" you just have to face the consequences.
