Thanks

Global Warming

I. General information on Global Warming.

A. Global warming is the rising temperature on Earth. (3)
1. It can be caused by burning too many fossil fuels
2. It can also be caused by deforestation (1)
a. Every second a forest the size of a pro football field is cut down for paper

B. Global Warming is causing the greenhouse effect (3).
1. The greenhouse effect is when the sun’s heat is trapped in our atmosphere by the greenhouse gases we make.
2. This can cause costal erosion.
a. It can also cause beaches to become smaller.
3. When green house gases increase our temperature increases.

C. These past 100 years have been the hottest years recorded. (3)
1. Green house gases are supposed to keep Earth at 57°F (1)
2. Green house gases have risen 1% every year for the past 100 years from human activities. (3)
3. In total carbon is up 27% since ancient times (1)
4. The average temperature on Earth is up about 1.33°F since 1950. (2)

D. There are many sources of alternative energy that we could use instead. (1)
1. For our cars we could use biodiesel which is made from corn.
2. To heat and power our houses we could use solar power from the sun, wind power, or geothermal power which comes from the Earth. (4)

II. Specific Information on Global Warming.

A. The effects of Global Warming will become really bad.
1. If our temperature increases to rapidly our weather will become fiercer than anything ever recorded.(1)
a. We will experience hurricanes past anything we could rank it as on the scale.
b. We’d also experience earthquakes that could reduce cities to piles of bricks and metal.
c. We’d have tornados that could suck up skyscrapers.
d. Also all this weather will happen all over the globe and more often.
2. Also with warmer weather we can expect an increase in illnesses like malaria and yellow fever.(3)
3. Also with stronger hurricanes we will experience more flooding.
a. More flooding will lead to an increase in the mosquito population by the millions.(3+1)
4. More effects of global warming include: (1)
a. Poison ivy will get bigger and itchier.
b. Fall leaves will turn a dull color.
c. Allergies season will start earlier and be more serious.
d. Out door ice rinks will shrink.
e. Maple syrup will be harder to get.
5. The North Pole will also start to melt along with the ice bergs and glaciers.(3)
a. Melting ice will cause sea levels to rise which could damage ecosystems

B. What is the Green House Effect?
1. The green house effect keeps some of the suns energy in our atmosphere in the form of heat.(2)
a. This happens by green house gases (carbon for example) lining our atmosphere
2. A little green house gas is good but too much is not.(1)
a. It can cause Earth to get to warm which is where you get the term global warming from.

C. Carbon emissions mostly come from the US.
1. We emit 25% of the world’s carbon emissions for about 5% of the world’s people.(4)
2. Carbon comes 21% from residents, 17% from businesses, 29% from industries, and 33% from cars buses and other transportation.(1)

III. Relevance to World Issues, Ecology & the Environment.

A. Global Warming will affect everyone no matter where you live.(1)
1. If you live by the coast your house may get flooded often because of rising sea levels.
2. If you live in or by the desert the temperature there might become so bad that you have to leave because it’s so hot.

B. The effects on the environment.
1. Even if you don’t live for another 100 years when it’s actually going to be a real problem you should still care.
a. Your children or grandchildren might never see a polar bear because they all drowned due to the polar ice caps melting.
b. They might be limited to where they can live because so areas may be to hot or flood too much.

C. Is it really that important?
1. It must be pretty important because there are many sponsors supporting the efforts to stop global warming.
a. They include:
i. MTV
ii. UGG
iii. The Philadelphia Eagles
iv. Paul Frank
