Bodies and wreckage from an AirAsia flight that went missing on its way to Singapore on Sunday were found on Tuesday in the Karimata Strait off the coast of Borneo, Indonesian rescue teams said.

Djoko Murjatmodjo, a senior official with Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, said the debris was from the missing plane, The New York Times reported.

“We’ve confirmed the wreckage was from the body of the plane,” Murjatmodjo said.

According to The Associated Press, six bodies were originally spotted about six miles from the site of Flight 8501's last communications with air-traffic control. Three of the bodies, which were found intact and without life jackets, were brought to an Indonesian navy ship, National Search and Rescue Director SB Supriyadi said.

At least 40 bodies were recovered over the next several hours, the navy told Reuters.

Debris, including what appeared to be suitcases and pieces from the aircraft, were also discovered floating in the Java Sea, members of search teams told the Indonesian news media.

AirAsia Flight 8501 went missing Sunday morning local time after taking off from Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya. No distress signal went out from the airplane. The Airbus 320-200 carried 155 passengers and seven crew on board, most of them Indonesians.

Satellite images showed heavy thunderstorms in the vicinity of the site where the plane lost contact on Sunday. Djoko Murjatmodjo of Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation told reporters during a press conference later that day that the pilot had requested to divert from the plane's scheduled flight path due to bad weather.

As footage of the grim discoveries aired on televisions at the airport in Surabaya, family members of the plane's passengers screamed and broke out into tears, AP reported. Several people reportedly collapsed after hearing the news.

AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes took to Twitter to share his thoughts.

"My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501," he wrote. "On behalf of AirAsia my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry I am."

The plane has yet to be found, Reuters reported. At this time, there's no word on the possibility of survivors.

About 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the U.S. have been searching for the missing plane since Sunday. Rescue teams are now heading to the area where the debris was found to collect additional evidence.

This is like the third plane to go missing in a year isn't it?

This is so tragic. I feel so terrible for all of the families affected.

Although, is this a widespread problem with Airbuses? I recall the AirFrance crash involving an airbus, and I also heard in the news recently about 3/4 airbuses nearly crashing and having to return back to the airport?

Oh, it was only speculation due to that fact that most of the near-crashes (don't know a better term for it) that I see popping up in the news recently involve airbuses

Not really. Check out "avherald" or The Aviation Herald. In there, you see every single incident involving airliners, and you'll notice there's as much airbuses as there are Boeing a or DeHavillands.

It just goes to show that while flying has become 'normal' it's still important to tell family that you love them and wish them a safe flight before they travel.

This is sad but at the same time relieving, as the families (and world) can get closure on what happened. However, the families of MH370 aren't as fortunate.

Like, I understand that it seems like 2014 was pretty bad but just remember that there are a ton of other crashes and accidents which "Aren't important enough" which is probably why those statistics say otherwise.

I'm just glad that they were able to find the bodies of some of the victims, so at least they're not gone forever.
