Ive thought about this for like a year so far and i think i really wanna be an FBI agent when i graduate school. I know it's a lot of work and fitness, and learning about criminal behaviour and stuff, but to me it's like such a cool career!!
My problem is my parents arent liking this choice AT ALL. My mom wants me to think about being a teacher, or something in medical. My dad just say's its "too dangerous" and that they usually only take woman if they are exceptional in HS and college, and "they don't get paid much". TO my dad everything is about "how much does it pay?".
I read a bunch of the qualifications and stuff online, and yea, they want smart people but i dont have to be all 4.0 GPA. I just have to have better grades (B's) and be physically fit, and be willing to travel.
So -- any advice about how to move forward? There really isnt much HS prep other then taking as many AP classes and i can handle.
DO you think it's a dumb idea or worth doing??? I really want some encouragement cause im not getting it at home. OR if you think its a bad idea, please tell my why.
Thanks

Can't really give much advice but I'll chime in with what I've got.,
If its what you want to do, do it, your parents can't tell you what to do forever, so why should they be able to decide what career you take forever? Hmm? Makes no sense.
Do what YOU want to do, don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it, also, "our dauter works for the FBI", I'm fairly sure they'll come round to the idea.

f**k your parents, its your life, and you should choose the career you want, not the one they want.

I had a similar discussion with my parents when I told them I wanted to do stuff with Classics instead of science like they wanted. What you gotta remember is they can't make you choose a career and they don't have to agree with the one you choose. If you want to be an FBI agent, be an FBI agent! Don't deny your dreams

I won't say "Fuck your parents", but I'm going to say do go for it. I'm in a similar situation, wanting to become an airline Pilot, but my mom isn't really too keen. Just do what i did, tell them "I'm sorry but that's my dream and that's what I'll do" and do your best. Good luck :)

But I agree. And besides, who cares what your parents think? They can't choose what career path you take. It's up to you want you want for yourself. Not their choice. They shouldn't be allowed to choose your path for you. They probably just want what's best for you. And they want you to be safe. But its time they realize that you are growing up, and its time for them to let go and let you choose.

I recently looked into this career choice myself, it's really interesting and pays decently for working for the government. For your dad, you could tell him its not that dangerous (its really not), its just like any other branch of the government, and it has a lot of paperwork and such. That shouldn't really matter anyway though, it's your life and you choose what path you want to take, tell them you're really serious about it. As for prepping, you could go onto the .gov website and look for extra stuff they might want you to do, you could also talk to someone in the field via email or such. If you want more information about it message me on my profile, would be happy to talk about it more!

Um, thats not true. My mom's friends ex-husband is a SA, and he was a medical sales person beforehand. Not legal training at all. He did speak 4 languages tho.

Okay, the only real thing I have to say about this is make sure you're not going for this just because it seems "cool". The FBI shown on TV is much different than the real thing. That being said, if you know this and still wanna go for it, go for it.
Not all FBI jobs require you to have the gun and run around chasing criminals. There are many civilian job opportunities with the FBI. This may not be what you want to do but for your parents who are concerned that it's too dangerous, let them know you're considering all your options and there are more than just the cop part.
I'm looking into working in communications for the RCMP (the Canadian equivalent of the FBI, kinda) and I have absolutely no interest in being a "mountie" or running around chasing the bad guys. I am quite happy with behind the scenes work. Hell, you could be the person who files paperwork or handles the phones. I'm just saying, there are ways to make your parents warm up to the idea slowly.
If you want to do it, there's no reason why you shouldn't. Your life isn't dictated by your parents. Once you're out of school, they have absolutely no control over your career, as much as some parents would like to believe they do.

GO FOR IT! I couldn't imagine my parents not being supportive, so I'm, very lucky, but do go for it if that's what you truly want to do!!

You gotta stay out of trouble and get good grades. If you are interested in that field, i'd try to schedule an informational interview (look it up) with an agent. That way you can get more information about what they do and how to become an agent. You never know, you might find that you don't want to do their job. You can then focus your energy on becoming something you do want to be.

If this is something you truly want to do with your life then don't allow yourself to get discouraged by some harsh criticism from your parents. I think most parents try to be controlling with their kids because they want the absolute best for them, and don't want to envision anything that could potentially be bad coming from their kids future. Although, as someone already pointed out, the FBI isn't solely based on danger factors, and having shoot-outs in the streets with criminals. If you can make your parents aware of this by showing them the facts, then I would imagine they will grow more accepting of it.
As far as upping your GPA, you should speak to a guidance counselor and lay out all of your options. AP classes can definitely help you, but they also require a lot of work and take up most of your free time. So, if you are struggling with keeping up with school as it is (I'm not sure if you are), this is going to make things a lot more difficult for you.
