View Full Version : Why Isn't Cussing Filtered?

I don't get it. Adult groups have language filters but this group allows every swear word there is. I am personally offended by the F word all the time. If the F word is inappropriate for adult forums then why is it ok for a teen forum?

Well, that's probably a first
Cussing/swearing/foul language is tolerated is moderate amounts mainly because of the nature of the forum: to let it all out and to seek help. And it has been published that swearing has therapeutic effects, along with approaching the post's reader from how the poster felt.
Plus, teens swear a lot :P

I hate to be a stick in the mud but like Alex said, it doesn't really bother anyone that much.
I mean, if you don't like the atmosphere of a forum, you don't have to use it. The other option would be to suck it up, as it is, after all, just a word. It's not even degrading, it's just profanity.
I mean, an optional filter might be a good idea, but honestly it's a really bad idea in my opinion to change such a significant thing on the site just for essentially one person.

Because it's not a big deal
If you get offended by profane language not directed in any particular direction or to any particular person, you're probably too young for the forum

Well if your ofended by someone saying the word fuck, anninterner forum really isn't the place for you, in fact, the hole Internet's not for you,
Also, people are allowed to say whatever the FUCK they want, and its not going to change because 1 person doesn't like it, its wrong to asume, that just because YOU don't like it, we should sensor everyone else. Censorship is already high on VT, please, don't try and take away our shits fucks and cunts, there all we have left.,

It's allowed because the site is used to "recover, learn, and grow together." The only way that happens is by expressing oneself. A lot of people express themselves through swearing.

Cussing is fun, and expressive. That's one of the reasons why I go on VT so often.

I swear all the time, fuck is one of my favourite words. As for your question, most people on here swear.

most adult forums I have seen do allow cussing. besides, let's be honest, most teenagers swear. if you don't that's ok, in fact, maybe even better. but most do

I'm sure I'm not the only one offended by the language here. I wasn't expecting to be attacked because I can express myself without profanity. Most of the replies are from older teens. I probably won't be back.

I'm not talking about those kind of adult forums. Forums that aren't just for kids.

There's more people here offended by the cussing. Those who have already posted here are the ones who have time during Christmas day. And some who are offended may not want to join this debate for their own reasons. You may be offended by it, but we can't help what we say. The profanity here is the least of the staff's worries.(Assuming its not being used in a "Fuck You" type of way.)
You're not being attacked either. We are just placing our own opinions, which is what online forums are all about. We can't all be on the same page.
differing opinions is what makes things work, differing opinions are needed.
^ This is a very correct phrase that goes for everything from games, to to forums, to political matters.
Anyways if the profanity offends you, just ignore the *bad words*. Freedom of speech, eh?

I'm actually disappointed in a few of the responses here. They're quite rude given that he said he didn't like the word. Why would you go out of your way to use a word in your reply that he said he doesn't like?
With that being said, OP, we choose to allow swearing. It's just what we've decided. Other sites for similar subjects or age groups may not, but we have. As long as it's not in an insulting way or directed at someone, it's extremely expressive which is our main goal. I'm sorry if it offends you, but I don't see us eliminating swearing. It'd be more harmful than helpful, and at the age users must be to join, it's not inappropriate in the context.

I agree with this. OP might be the only one offended, but you guys are just being really rude for no reason, other than to insult. This is a forum designed to help people, not bash them for differing views. I for one was raised in a very anti-curse word family. You would think I'd be the same way but I didn't follow those ideals. But I also don't go around swearing in every sentence :P

Hey, when I was 12-15, I still wasn't offended by the f word in the slightest. I hardly think it's a matter of age, it's just the users who responded, just like you might not like the f word when you're 18, so yeah.
And honestly, I don't think I've seen a single adult forum that filters cussing. Gaia online is kind of an exception, but even then, filtering is an option there.

People get offended at things that other people say, not limited to profanity, that are not particularly offensive all the time. The only variable is whether or not the person finds reason to merit it offensive for some reason or not. Not like I personally insulted him directly using profanity. I stand by my original point that if it offends him that much, he shouldn't be here. I guarantee he's going to see it elsewhere. A lot. Not really rude imo, more just stern

Okay OP few things i wanted to say.First off, i don't swear a lot, like once in half a dozen years or more, i don't remember.
I can see you've got a solution thanks to phuckphace(ohkay that name's got irony :P )
But i feel that's not the best solution. You may get filters here but you won't get any in real life. And believe me it would do you more harm than good telling people to not cuss, if you ever do so.
What i feel is that it's very tough to change people. Rather it's better to change yourself by accomodating. If you don't like cussing, ignore it. Block it out by creating filters inside your head. That's what i do at least. :)

Honestly, this should be posted a suggestion asking if it's possible to toggle on or off filtering curse words.
I see where you're coming from with your post, that at the same time there are situations (especially when we're talking about teens here) where a curse word is simply the best way to really enforce a statement. Though obviously some people (including yourself) don't want to see it, so to please everyone a togglable setting would be the best option if that was possible.

Letting us type one of the most beautiful words in the English language (and I'm not even being sarcastic) helps people to vent and express themselves, and to exercise emphasis in descriptions. Censoring words like Feelings You Can Keep, or See You Next Tuesday, or any other word like that is really, what is against this site. Sorry if you don't like it. But, this site is probably not for you then.
Feelings You Can Keep and See You Next Tuesday are FUCK and CUNT, if you didn't know.

I'd rather have a couple of swear words on my screen, then seeing ******************************************************************************** ******************************************************************************** ******************************************************************************** ******************************************************************************** **************************** all over my screen.

I admire that you aren't a cusser but sadly most teens are. Thus I doubt a filter will appear.
