View Full Version : Are people surprised when you tell them?

Every time I tell someone I'm bisexual, I'm always (seriously, like 100% of the time) met with shock or surprise.
I went to a place called Ruthin with some friends to go to a party, and I told them I was Bi, and one of them said "what the fuck!? I would never have guessed, you seem like the straightest guy I've ever met", which I suppose could be a compliment...maybe?

Are you ever met with surprise? I suppose it varies from person to person, based on how stereotypically gay you are.

Not really. People say I look like a dyke.

Yes, but not in the sense that they expected me to be straight.... they expect me to say I'm gay and they get shocked when I turn out to be bisexual :P

I don't know why......yes they are. They always tell me I don't look gay I usually ask them what a gay guy looks like.

I'm not bi/gay but when I lived in Indiana I had a bisexual (Male) friend, and I honestly didn't know till he told me. I never thought he was bi, but I was cool with it.

I get reactions anywhere from

"Oh I could tell"

To

"I thought maybe"

To

"Wtf no, I thought you were straight!" (...How?)

If anything, sometimes I get a, "really?" But nothing more than that. I've never shown any particular romantic interest in anyone, so I guess it's not a huge surprise. I guess it might also help that I always mention it casually in conversation.

From the people that I've told myself, I've gotten 2 "really?" only because they knew I liked guys in some way. I've gotten one "ok...and?" and two "holy shit". And one "i could tell". Then one of the first two told some of our friend group and apparently they saw it in me XD

Most people aren't too surprised, cuz I act pretty gay...
Occasionally, I'll get someone who is surprised, but not often.

got one "Okay... and?" However he mentioned he could never have guessed unless i told him. Apart from that i got a couple of "Oh haha you are joking. You are obviously straight." There is also a girl who admitted she had a slight suspicion I could be gay but was very confused. So yea the general perception is that I'm straight and people can't guess otherwise until i tell them.
Of course it wasn't like this always. 7-8 years back, people could easily guess i was gay by my behaviour etc. There was also lots of bullying, alienation initiated by that and ironically i was madly in love with a girl at that time. That gross period of about an year or so ended when i had to move to another place. But yea it affected me pretty badly and i sort of hardened up after that. At that time i believed being gay was something bad, unnatural and unacceptable. So i started pretending to be what was acceptable. I forcibly changed myself, checking myself often like "Dude don't do that. That's gay, you'll be judged for it." yada yada.
It was only when i discovered this wonderful site that i realised being lgbt wasn't bad and the community could be cool. That sort of eased me.
I have been growing out of the masquerade for a while. So now the armor i wrapped myself in has become a part of my life so that now i don't care how i would be judged and act as i wish to.

i am totally gay, but i am also the straightest boy you could ever meet, so people always assume. when i do tell them im gay i do get some surprised reactions, even disbelief. i find it all rather amusing.

um now that more people know it is not too shocking but yea it can be. I am pretty masculine and the fact I am bi and am currently dating a girl, most people would not guess it unless I told them.

Every person I've told (which is a lot) have been shocked. I wear makeup and nice clothes so I guess I look like the stereotypical straight girl. Luckily I haven't gotten any negative responses, just surprise.

When I first told my sisters, there was mild surprise. My other sister -- who had come out as asexual the previous day -- was disappointed because she wanted people to be surprised at her coming out but instead they were surprised at my coming out.

The first person I came out to (now my best friend but not really at the time) said he never would have guessed in a million years. The 2nd person who was probably my closest friend at the time said he thought I was gay for a while (even though I'm bi and hadn't even thought of myself until bi until a few weeks before I told him). And then my 2 longest standing friends who I'm also pretty close with at first were like "Wait WHAT" but then after mulling it over for a little while decided that it made sense.

Most others just say "oh, interesting" as if they didn't exactly expect it but aren't totally surprised. So a majority think I'm straight but it also isn't earth shattering when they find out that I'm not.
