Hi, the problems are that when I try to record a video no sound is picked up just like a quiet crackling sound & when I put someone on speaker phone they can't hear me, apart from that everything else works fine on the sound side of things, this is an insurance replacement for my last one that broke so it is only a month and a bit old, feelin quite annoyed about it, any help at all would be appreciated, I don't want to have to go all the way to the apple store as it is in the city centre and there is probably a way for me to sort it my self with sound advice. Anyone at all had this problem/problems and knows what's up? thanks.

Ive never had this particular problem, but if you get the chance I would recommend taking it back to the apple store haha. just to be sure, have you restored the phone to make sure nothing when wrong the last time?

Sounds like your microphone is damaged or something ^^'
I would take it back to the store and ask for a new one :)

Ignore the stupid comments about how you should have gotten an Android, I know several people with this exact issues on their droids.
Your issue is the microphone. To replace that part is actually SUPER simple, and should be under $20. It's one big piece that sits in the bottom of the phone and contains the speaker, wifi antenna and the microphone (among a few other things) if you google either iPhone 4s microphone replacement or iPhone 4s speaker replacement you should be able to see a quick video of it. If it looks too involved there is probably a local shop that can do it for you fairly cheap!
