BREAKING NEWS: At least 10 hostages taken in Sydney cafe siege
Nicholas McCallum

Police have closed down parts of Martin Place in Sydney's CBD after a man with a shotgun took hostages at a busy cafe.

A police media spokeswoman confirmed officers are attending the scene and an operation was underway but could offer no further detail.

There are a large number of NSW police on the scene with people clearly visible with their hands pressed against the windows of the Lindt cafe.

Onlookers say there is what appears to be an Islamic flag in the cafe's window.

Twitter users are reporting a man was in the area armed with a shotgun.

"Police crawling over building where Chambers bar is," Twitter user Sarah Gerathy wrote. "At least one has his gun drawn. Martin place blocked off between Elizabeth & Philip st."

Two police tactical teams are in position with specialist officers with blast shields moving into the Chanel building directly opposite to the cafe.

Workers in nearby buildings, including the Seven Network, have been ordered to evacuate the area.

NSW government offices, including Premier Mike Baird's, are in the vicinity of the cafe.

This is crazy. I don't get why people do things like this? Who does this benefit?

Get a sniper team and pop the guy. Usually can't resolve those situations with you bloodshed.

As a nation Australia aren't usually ones to mess about so hopefully they'll manage to resolve this with as few casualties as possible.

just another day in multicultural paradise. the only winning move is not to play, but we'll see how many hostages they have to kill before Australian voters figure that out.

It's been good to hear that allegedly 5 of the hostages have managed to get out alive.

Any kind of progress at the moment is good news.

Just another day in Aussieland. Sometimes Serbia seems like a stable safe-heaven compared to other first-world and second-world countries.

Well, they've been getting terror raids all summer I think, at least when the ISIS crisis started.

Australia had one raid back on September 18th (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Australian_terror_raids), where one guy ended up being charged with conspiracy.
