View Full Version : I just electrocuted myself with 1.2 amps...

Yup, I just put 1.2 amps through my right hand, (0.1 amps will kill you if it shorts across your body in the wrong way, I am EXTREMELY lucky to be alive right now)

I was working on getting a quad bike running, and I was charging the battery for it, it was caging with 1.2 amps, and when I went to disconnect it I forgot to turn it off properly (fucking genius). It shorted across my right hand, my little finger touched one terminal and my thumb touched the other, and it shorted across my hand.

Since I did it my hand has felt numb and kind of tingly, like it will after being electrocuted, but it's been like that for about 9 hours? now, I'm starting to wonder if I have nerve damage, but I'm far from an expert, I don't know if it will feel this way for a few days, or if it should have felt like that for 2 minuets. Should my hand still feel this weird after 9 hours?

Hehhe you should try 150 amps up the arm. And you thought 1.2 was bad....anyways you should be fine if I was fine after 150 you'll be fine after 1.2

What voltage was it?

I'd say your fine. It'll probably feel that way for more than two minutes because of how much amperage went through your hand. If it doesn't get any better by tomorrow or gets worse just pay your doctor a visit. Is it hurting at all? Or just numb and tingly?

well don't electrocute yourself then.

no, in all seriousness I think you should be fine. like Thomas said, if you get worse or are still feeling a lot of pain tomorrow (maybe go in to get a checkup, just to be sure)

Okay, I remember in Physics last year reading up about voltage and amps. After doing a bit of reading, check out this website here (https://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~p616/safety/fatal_current.html) and if I'm reading this correctly, it does state here->

"Above 200 milliamps (0.2amp), the muscular contractions are so severe that the heart is forcibly clamped during the shock. This clamping protects the heart from going into ventricular fibrillation, and the victim's chances for survival are good."

So unless they wrote this wrong, or if I'm not understanding correctly, hey, you should still be alive. You should probably make an appointment with a doctor, just in case of any long-term effects, but yeah, you should be alive (And I think if you're here you are).

nerve damage is a possibility, it depends on length of contact but yeah maybe nerves and some soreness

You will live, but I would visit the doctor if I were you, just in case :P

If you still can move that arm you should be alright, I think. If it persists seek medical help.

Did you go to the doctor? Are you ok now?

Not really OK, no. I have two scars on my hands where the heat and current burnt the flesh (the the point of when I did it it smelled like cooking meat, I was surprised how fast it could happen, my hand only contacted for 3 or 4 seconds)
The doctor has looked at it 3 times now, at first he was worried I have burnt the inside of my hand (however that works...) but now he says it'll be fine once the burn heals, and that I'm likely to have 2 scars.

Your sperm cells are probably all dead by now. Good luck having kids in the next 30 years.

Just kidding.

As long as you're not suffering from any burns, fractures, dislocations, and other injuries you should be fine. The tingling sensation should only last a day or two. If not, call 911 and pray they don't have to chop your hand off.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Phil
