I'm bad at summeries, so bear with me.

1)The Catcher In The Rye
JD Salinger
A look into the days of Holden Caulfield after he is kicked out of his private school. He reflects on his life, the people in it and the world around him. (bad description, but it's a good book)

2) White Oleander
Janet Fitch
A book about Astrid Magnussen's journey though her teen years in foster care after her mother is put into prison for murder.

3) A Separate Peace
John Knowles
Shows the destructive relationship of best friends Phineas and Gene (who are polar opposites)

4)Maus: 1 and 2
Art Spiegelman
His father's story about going through the holocaust in the form of a comic strip. Simple, yet very powerful

5) Things Fall Apart
Chinua Achebe
Okonkwo, a stubborn man of power in an African tribe's life slowly starts to fall apart as Christian missionaries start coming in and changing their traditions and beliefs.

Just for starters... ; )

House of Leaves
Mark Z. Danielewski
Go to this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Leaves

It's amazing, several plots and shit, although it is really confusing.
