So we all know the saying, if you have a gut feeling about something it is usually true and we shouldn't ignore it yada yada yada...

Have you ever had a gut feeling about something & it turned out to be true? Or do you think its just all just a myth and the gut feeling is just a paranoia feeling? I'm on the fence with this one because there has been times where I have had the feeling and it turned out to be just a feeling as such(as far as I know)

There was one or two times where I had a gut feeling about something and it turned out it was true.

Thoughts?

My gut feeling is more often right than it is wrong, but I acknowledge the fact that I cannot solely rely on it because a lot of times situations/circumstances are more complex than just saying "yeah I have a good feeling about it, let's go with this."

I think a "gut feeling" is more based off of subconscious thought, and knowledge you already possess, than most people realize. It's kind of like thinking about something without putting a conscious effort into thinking about it. This knowledge influences your feeling even without being aware that the gears are turning. I'm don't mean that you're making an informed, well thought out decision by going with your gut feeling, but I don't think it's necessarily a blind choice, although it has the potential to be.

I never thought of it in the subconscious knowledge way, that makes more sense, if you subconsciously pick up on hints about something then start to have a feeling about it, it can be true. MIND = BLOWN.

I have to agree with Mike. I don't know if it's instinct, the the sub conscious or what. I know if I go with my gut feelings about stuff usually they're right.

A gut feeling is something you usualy have when the answer is already in your head but you still need to reach it. Let me try to explain.
If I study hard for a test, and I get a test that's multiple choice, I'll still have trouble getting all the answers right even though I just read and studied all the information I need to reproduce here, right?

So, teachers often advice, rightfuly,
that a multiple choice test should be done in a simple way;
choosing the answer you first think is correct,
so your "gut feeling", even though it's not the same gut feeling as a feeling about certain situations or people, and this is much more primitive, it's just an example;
since reading the question and thinking about each answer will only add more information onto your memory,
the best thing is to trust what the back of your mind tells you, where the actual studied information is, instead of trying to produce a new answer by reading the questions and try to solve them logicaly.

Atleast, that's how I've always seen it.
I feel the same way about all "gut feeling' situations;
if you meet someone you have a bad feeling about, in the back of your mind (or your gut), it's old information or instinctive information telling you something.
You won't be able to tell what it is by adding more information onto that, just as with a multiple choice test, so it's best to trust your first feeling.

Anyone relate?

If I have a gut feeling I follow it and 99% of the time it turns out to be a good call, or if it isn't exactly the right call it's better than the majority of options that I did have.

Problem is for all of those scenarios where you are directly on the fence, those are the annoying and tricky ones.

to add to that, most of the time if you meet someone you have a bad feeling about its probably from their body language which you pick up on form opinions on them subconsciously

Yes and even if the gut feeling was wrong, things happen for a reason and it just wasn't meant to be.
