The Pigman’s Legacy Review
Paul Zindel has done it again. After the exciting story called The Pigman, came The Pigman’s Legacy, a sequel in which the saying “History always repeats itself” is proved correct. Zindel Productions published it in 1980. The format of the book is the same, John and Lorraine alternate writing chapters. The book starts to focus in on the tormented, awkward love affair blossoming between John and Lorraine. The first book only hinted at it here or there, like when the two of them dressed up in old vintage clothes and make the spaghetti dinner, and pretend they are old-time movie stars. Their affection really starts to show when they express their feelings for one another in “secret chapters” but are revealed to us.
As John and Lorraine were recovering emotionally from their experience with the Pigman, they walked by the Pigman’s house and Lorraine spotted something in the bedroom window. The house had been vacant for four months, but now it was being lived in. They are somehow drawn there; they need to meet the new tenant, even though they know that they should just mind their own business. They know they should let the past stay in the past. Later investigation revealed that an old, sad man named Gus was living in the Pigman’s house because he was on the run from tax collectors. Even though they think that he is their chance to make it up to the Pigman, it isn’t going to be easy. Gus is a bitter old man when they first meet him, but their lunchroom janitor, Dolly, helps him show his good side. Dolly, a former assistant dietitian at the Hill View Hospital, but when the company disappeared she was demoted to sweeper. Now she is a custodial worker at the Staten Island High School. Later when John and Lorain needed help, Dolly was happy, almost ecstatic to help. Gus was on the run from the IRS because his master, Colonial, died, but later we learn that his dogs name is Gus, and that he is the Colonial. Through out all of this John and Lorraine’s feelings for each other are revealed.
At the beginning of the first book you would of never think that they would become so close but know you can see that they are destined for each other. The way it works out is really nice.
Will John and Lorraine get together? Or will they grow apart? Find out in The Pigman’s Legacy.
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY!!!!
