....If a tree falls down in the woods and no one is around to hear it- does it make a sound?

Of course. Sound waves are transmitted regardless if there are people to hear them or not.

Mmmm weird... :P

Interesting question... I love this question. I hate giving the standard scientific answer, but wouldn't it be cool if they didn't make a noise, but I guess we will never know. :)

If I copied you there would be spelling mistakes. :)

But a microphone means someone is listening to it at some point. But the question is if something is not perceived can it exist. Like sound is only sound if someone hears it. If no one can hear it, can sound exist?

I know the answer...it both WOULD make a sound and it WOULDNT make a sound....
If a tree fell down, sound waves would be transmitted. But first, we have to ask ourselves, what is sound? Sound is compressed waves of air, which our ears, over millions of years, have evolved to interprete.
So...
Yes in as much as the noise has the power to produce a sensory experience in humans (hearing). But no, in the sense that if there were no perceivers (i.e. no-one with ears) then there would be no subjective experience of a noise, jsut compression waves of air.

EASY no one knows you cant know b/c if no is around to hear how could you know if you cant know something you havint heard or seen its like the big bang no knos for sure if it happened we only have science to tell us :P

okay heres my two cents
depending on what you consider sound a tree falling does make sound waves so if u think someone has to here it to be a sound then it doesnt make a sound but i think it does

I'm pretty sure I had a teacher tell me the answer was no because there is nothing to receive the waves.

In the matter of said tree. Yes it does make a sound. Sound waves are transmitted from the tree even if we don't hear them

I still say llamas can talk with their ears.
On topic: The tree makes a sound. Sound waves are transmitted, thus the tree makes a sound. Yippee-ai-ay?

Well if you consider talking as patterns in the form of sound waves then OF COURSE THEY CAN!

sound is just vibrations in the air, so if there is nothing to interprete those waves as sound (like there is no-one to do so in the example) then it does not make a sound, even if the waves of sound are created.

then it does not make a sound, even if the waves of sound are created.
That's self-contradictory. Sound waves are created, but not interpreted. Sound is created, but not experienced, so it doesn't affect anyone, but the sound does exist.

Better question: If a tree falls on a mime in a forest, does it make a sound?

Now onto the more important question: If a potato has eyes, can it see?
To the jellyfish: Of course not. But that has only ever happened once.

Thats basically what I was saying, though you put it better than me

Yeah, it makes a sound. Thats like asking if someone got shot on the other side of the world, would the gun make a firing sound?

Of course they make noise. Sond s wave would be transmitted but not heard by the human ear.

This is old, and even if it wasn't your post didn't add anything to the debate.
