What does the referrals thing mean under statistics, and is it bad?

When joining a forum, you have the option to add a referral - someone who told you about the forum, or for some reason made you want to join the forum. It seems like three people put you as a referral when signing up! It doesn't do anything forum-wise.

Ok, i thought it was like a referral in school, they are bad for us lol, but who were these referrals is my quesrion O.O

Is there a way for me to see who I referred?
