A carnival ride operator working at Sydney's Royal Easter Show has been stabbed during an argument with a group of showgoers, police say.

About 8.30pm (AEDT) on Friday the 18-year-old ride operator became involved in an argument with a group of people and was allegedly stabbed in the ribs and stomach with a sharp object.

"Witnesses nearby intervened and broke up the assault before the alleged offenders ran off and police were contacted," police said in a statement.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Westmead Hospital and was reported to be in a stable condition.

Police arrested an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old, both from Auburn in Sydney's south west.

The pair were questioned by police but have been released pending further inquiries.
