I'm a senior, and I'm about to graduate from HS. But I haven't handed in my college applications.. The thing is I'm not sure what I want to choose, from all the majors I'm interested I can only apply to 2.
Studying medicine is all I've ever wanted. I want to be a doctor. But there's always a chance that I don't get in, so I need help on picking my backup major.
1. International business and management. I haven't thought about this much but my dad urges me to go there. I feel like I'd be great in this, since I'm very innovative and am also great with persuading people.
2. Pharmacy. But I can't see myself as a chemist. But it's a close thing to medicine and being a doctor, isn't it?
3. Music.. I love playing my violin, it makes me..live. But my parents say it's only a hobby, something to run away to when things get ugly. I'm not sure I want to be a professional violinist too though. I don't want to feel pressured whilst playing it.
4. Engineering. The rest of my family majored in engineering, I think it's the 'safest' path for me to choose. I have tons of connections if I choose this.
I know, my choices are really different from eachother. If you guys have any input on where I should pick or maybe you have another idea for me to try, I'd love that. Really, anything is appreciated. :)

It is a tough choice and a hard decision I think I saw you are in Yugoslavia? do you aim to study there?
Maybe you could find out how easy it would be to transfer courses say after the first year of study - Engineering has many aspects did you mean mechanical engineering.
whatever however its good to plan.

1.Are you bilingual? It would help to learn Japanese/Mandarin, German etc. If you are, great, if not, then it would be a good idea to learn other languages if you want to pursue this. Study economics and sociology to start. Perhaps you are wanting to start your own company or business? If so, this should be great for you.
2.Has a really big high job turnover rate right now. Which means the chances of you finding a job in that field after college is high. There is a lot of studying of medicine and things of that sort. There are probably chances of you to have career growth to be pharmacist or chemist. But you would probably start off as a clerk at a pharmacy while you are studying or just until you work your way up. It is very rewarding work and many members here have discussed interest in this as well.
3.I'm gonna be blunt honest. This is a hard road to go down. Many don't really consider it a field of study, rather than a hobby or a kickstart for a musician to become famous or sell records. Yeah there is music theory and appreciation, composing, but all in all, many people are just going to assume you are studying music to become a singer or record producer. You can always choose this as a minor and maybe as an elective or something of that sort. However, I'm not saying don't go for it, just out of the four you mentioned, this one will be a more difficult adventure and I myself consider it more as a hobby or side activity rather than a career opportunity.
4.The best out of the four you mentioned. High demand work for right now, high pay and work activity. Very innovative and creative, always learning new thing and ideas pertaining to this career. You do have to have lots of knowledge of science. If you do decide to go for engineering, you have to stay committed to it, there are many side career opportunities, Mechanical engineering, social engineering etc. You can feel free to do more research on that.
Now, these are just my opinion and you can take that with face value and add it to what you already think of your fields of study. Always go with your gut feeling and go for something you are compassionate about. Best of luck. :)

I don't recall ever telling anyone I'm from Yugoslavia. But yeah, I don't plan to study outside my country.

thanks for your advice, but I can't really afford to transfer majors.. I have to finish what I choose, that's why this is such a hard decision to make:(

thanks a lot, I hope things work out for you too.

I am a bilingual, and my family already has a company, so if I go here I'd probably be the successor.. I have that all planned up for me.
I guess 2&3 are ruled out now.

I love science, particularly biology and chemistry but I'm not sure I could keep up with physics.. I know there are plenty of options but idk which is the most suitable for me. I don't want to waste years for something I'm not passionate about.

I really appreciate this, I haven't decided where to go just yet but at least now I have a little sense of direction. Thank you.

Could you apply as undeclared and then take a semester to make up your mind?

No, unfortunately I can't. My country has a really tight competition between college applicants.. If I don't choose right from the beginning, I'd either waste years of studying something I don't like or I'd not get in at all. Like, if I want to study medicine, I'd compete against more than 6000 applicants for only 40 seats. So yeah.. Thanks for your post btw:)
