It's definitely pleasurable...but not really a substitute for anything. When I was dating and having sex...I would still masturbate. It's a big stress reliever too.

For me, I get horny and feel like I need to cum. I don't feel like that need is as specific as being a need to have sex or a need to masturbate. Either is equally capable of satisfying it and cumming is always intensely pleasurable however it happens. There are other differences, of course, between sex and masturbation and I don't think of one as a substitute for the other.
