Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The age old question returns to give you nightmares! :) I personally think it must've been a hybrid version of the two.. but what do I know.. WHAT DO YOU THINK? *Points finger at YOU*

God made the chicken.
My reference(The Bible) says he made the finished animal, not the egg.
Therefore, in short.
Le chicken.

The egg. Is there really any other answer to this? :P
There are two interpretations:
(Egg containing mutant thing like a chicken) [1]
(Mutant thing like chicken)
(Egg containing chicken) [2]
(Chicken)
Since [1] is still an egg, just not a chicken egg, it's one answer.
Since [2] is the first egg to contain a real chicken, it's the other.
But unless you believe that God put chickens on the Earth, egg has to be the answer.
So I guess this is a theological question :P
Edit: Gosh, I was kidding, but apparently it's already turned into one.

yeah thats the simple way to put it , this is the complicated version:
In nature, living things evolve through changes in their DNA. In an animal like a chicken, DNA from a male sperm cell and a female ovum meet and combine to form a zygote -- the first cell of a new baby chicken. This first cell divides innumerable times to form all of the cells of the complete animal. In any animal, every cell contains exactly the same DNA, and that DNA comes from the zygote.
Chickens evolved from non-chickens through small changes caused by the mixing of male and female DNA or by mutations to the DNA that produced the zygote. These changes and mutations only have an effect at the point where a new zygote is created. That is, two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote contained the mutation(s) that produced the first true chicken. That one zygote cell divided to produce the first true chicken. Prior to that first true chicken zygote, there were only non-chickens. The zygote cell is the only place where DNA mutations could produce a new animal, and the zygote cell is housed in the chicken's egg. So, the egg must have come first
Well I understand it anyway :)

Le egg of course = )
Why: Evolution and mutation

Of course this raises the question. Which came first?: God or something else? I would say the one smoking the ciggarette :P
But it's obvious the chicken

Its obvious...
THE EGG!!!

I would say the one smoking the ciggarette :P
"A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face and the egg is frowning and looking a bit pissed off. The egg mutters, to no-one in particular, "Well, I guess we answered THAT question!""
:P
But I agree its the egg
Something which wasn't quite a chicken, layed an egg which contained the first "true" chicken.

I believe the egg coming first is the most likely scenario, but I still like my hybrid theory. :)

Eggs obviously since the chicken didn't exist until like 8000 years ago or something probably... and before that there were dinosaur eggs!

WAIT!!!! Why does it HAVE to be a Chicken??? Why not an Alligator or a Platypus or a Duck? So I am gonna make a guess here and say that the egg came first with all these animals, even more.

i think it was the egg. the chicken evolved over time from a dinosaur into a 'chicken' but it wasnt a chicken yet. lets say this species has can fly really far. then it lays an egg. this chick insid has evolved because flying far distances was unnecicery so now it cant really fly. now this is a chicken. or atleast this iswhat i believe.

The egg is billions of years old, since the dawn of dinosaurs. The chicken is about 25 centuries old, due to evolution.
So, the egg came first.~My opinion

OK let`s get back on track guys. The egg comes before a shiny new chicken, too, so thats one reason why the egg came first.

The chicken came first cause a stupid egg wouldn't have lasted long enough to hatch. Without something protecting it like...A CHICKEN!

Ok I have a question: in the bible after Adam, did Eve come at the same time as the rest of the animals or before?
If she came before, the egg would have come first, because she has thousands of eggs in her ovaries
if she came at the same time as chickens, then chickens and eggs would have come at the same time, because of the eggs in the chicken's ovaries
Underground_Network
April 2nd, 2008, 08:50 PM
Wait.. so you're saying Eve gave birth to a chicken? 0.o

Underground_Network
April 2nd, 2008, 08:56 PM
Yer, but I don't understand what Eve's ovaries have to do with the chicken and the egg. We are referring to the egg that bore the chicken, not the egg in general.
MoveAlong
April 2nd, 2008, 08:59 PM
oh, i thought you meant the egg in general. They never said which came first: the chicken or the chicken egg
Underground_Network
April 2nd, 2008, 09:01 PM
If we were referring to the egg in general, the egg obviously came first.. I mean hello, there were lots of things around before humans that could reproduce, and these things were also most likely around before humans as well... So there were things that bore eggs before Eve came along (If you believe in creationism or evolution, either way there was life before humans)

The chicken came first cause a stupid egg wouldn't have lasted long enough to hatch. Without something protecting it like...A CHICKEN!
But...then again...a cycle doesn't really have a beginning so maybe the answer is neither.
Hauptmann Kauffman

The answer is the egg. A less evolved chicken hatched the egg that spawned the final chicken.
The Batman
April 3rd, 2008, 07:28 PM
Even if it was less evolved it still was a chicken. I say both because the chicken was inside the egg.

It HAS to be the chicken. I ate the egg.

The egg, technically. A long long long time ago, there was nothing on the Earth but billions of single-celled organisms, and water. These organisms changed and evolved, eventually forming the plants and animals we know today. At some point, one of those organisms was destined to become a chicken, and started reproducing by means of the egg. It wasn't a chicken yet, but it was using an egg to keep the species alive and eventually become the chicken. However, if you wanted the specific chicken egg instead of just any old egg, then it was the chicken. Finally, after all that evolution, a generation of that organism had the characteristics of a modern chicken. Then that chicken laid an egg and spawned more chicken, etc. Thats how I see it,
Areus
April 8th, 2008, 10:44 PM
Yes, the egg came first, seeing as eggs were around before chickens, but if it must be a chicken egg, then probably the chicken, seeing as the tiny one-celled beings or whatever would've formed together into an organism, the chicken, capable of laying eggs. I think...

There are two answers of coures because if ur chirstion u would belive god mad the chicken first but if u dont belive in gos that much u would say egg beacuse a chicken evolved from a dinosaure egg

the chicken came first because eventually dinosaurs evolved into chickens... which means that a dinosaur isnt gonna have an egg that randomly becomes a chicken, also, it didnt just instantly go from dino to chicken, it took time and eventaully make it to what it looks like today. There u go i think i answered ur question with my well thought out opinion

if you're talking evolution it would be the egg that came first
the first true chicken would have been hatched from a different (but not by much VERY similar at this point) animal
but the changes
the genetic mutations
are small and take thousands of years hundreds if not thousands of generations
but ya
egg

The egg. The riddle never says the egg is necessarily a chicken's, and eggs have been around for billions of years before chickens.

I dont know if this is posted already, because I dont feel like going through 3 pages of posts. But the EGG came first :). The egg came first through the inter-breeding of two other animals that laid an egg (And in that egg was the CHICKEN)...

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. It is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record.

It had to be the chicken who laid the egg.. So it had to be the chicken..
The chicken itself MUTATED from some slimy sea fish to some furry mammal over millions of years...
Or maybe thats what they want us to believe?
