View Full Version : Why I'm not getting a job

I don't plan on getting a job and doing anything with my future, for a few reasons.
1. The pay is too low.
2. The hours are too long.
3. I want to avoid legal liability. (If I start a business)
4. I don't have time
5. I don't wanna be overworked.
Someone tell me if there's any way to avoid any of these. (Especially #3)

Not insulating you directly, but that's idiotic. What are you gonna' do? Become a hobo? Sure you'll LOVE all the free time you have then, free time begging.

Do you want to start your own company then? If you don't want to work, you have to make money somehow. You can go to school and learn how to be successful in your own business. I'm sure if you find a job you like doing and study and motivate yourself hard, you might end up liking it. Your future is what you make it though, just you are going to have to support yourself somehow.

while I think that the OP is feeling more hopeless than he should, this statement is a little dumb especially if you've turned on the news lately. things being the way they are, it is very difficult if not outright impossible for many people to "make it" in life. you might say the Man be holdin a brotha down.
that's not to say becoming successful (whatever that even means) isn't possible for some. I'm sure there are hundreds or maybe even thousands of people who were born in a dumpy double-wide and now own Ferraris and yachts, but it would be incredibly silly to suggest that this is representative of the average person. there are many, many MANY externalities that can and do affect a person's ability to "make their own future," as you put it. success (if we're referring to financial success) is more of a game of chance and accidental luck than anything else. your gain is someone else's loss.
to the OP: I think you've been reading too much Dilbert. any business that hires someone your age won't be legally allowed to give you over a certain amount of hours per week due to laws related to school attendance, and most will be more than happy to give you as few as you want or even fewer, because fewer hours means fewer golds they have to pay you.
the pay does suck balls, I'll give you that, but less money is better than no money at all, right?

Well I'm going to agree to disagree on this issue. I was just simply implying that whatever choices he wants to make in life are his and his alone. It doesn't hurt to get a little education and it's up to him on how he uses it. He doesn't have to graduate college or anything, just it's nice for him to get his cards in order so life would be less stressful for him. Nothing more or nothing less of achieving success and happiness in his career goals. We all change directions and dreams so who is to say that he won't?

The best way to avoid #3 would be to make your company an LLC (Limited Liability Company) That would help avoid liability to some extent and protect your personal belongings.

I feel the EXACT same way you do about this my friend!! Our government states that our living wage is £7.85 an hour, which is $12.56, they also state that our legal minimum wage is £6.50, which is $10.60. I don't know what the minimum/living wage is set by your government, but I think this is outrageous for the UK. I believe if you work your ass off no matter what it is your doing, especially hard labour where you are knackered after a days work you should be paid a higher wage, the governments living wage gives us the money to pay bills & buy food, depending on who you live with and if you have a family. It then leaves you with hardly any money for your self to buy what you want and enjoy your money rather than only working to scrape to survive. There is thousands upon thousands of people in Scotland starving because of this, even people with jobs on minimum wage who are struggling to keep up the demands of paying bills and buying food! Something needs to be done.
The way I see it is you can only live a happy life without struggles if you are insanely smart and have a job that pays you more than you know what to do with or if you win the lottery or you are born into a billionare family, where from day 1 you will never have a financial worry. I don't want to be in a shitty job with shitty pay living a life where I can barely afford to go to the pub or take a girl out somewhere. I am doing College to get a qualification which will hopefully get me a job where I can make a decent living and have a better life in future.

Sorry, not sorry, but this is dumb unless you're a trust fund baby with rich parents.
I work at Forever 21 with a $9.50hr. I work 30-36 hours a week. I go to college (full financial aid). If I didn't work, I wouldn't be able to eat. I work hard, and do what I have to do. If I didn't work, not only would I not be able to eat, I wouldn't be able to go out, buy my textbooks, buy my clothes, my metrocard, my phone bill AND i'm saving up for an apartment (I live in NYC btw, which is really expensive). I might only make $450 a check (about $900 a month), but it suffices. If I didn't work now, I'd have no job experience, and with no job experience and a job market where it is required almost, you're gonna be stuck. In a few months, I can move up to a head cashier position at $11/hr, then a manager position at $17/hr. If you don't start from the bottom, how are you gonna work your way up? I'm studying to be a doctor, but it is always nice to ahve job experience bc it teaches you responsibility (sounds corny, but it does), as well as social skills. And if you do a low pay retail job as a start, you don't need insurance and you have pocket money to get whatever you want. Don't knock it till you try it.

I feel like a rich kid saying this but i make $20 an hour sitting in the seat of a front end loader. That job was a lucky break with a new company that has the money game down to a T. They started with two brothers, and are now a multi million dollar empire, still with only 18 employees, including me.
That being said, I have to agree with phuckface that wether you make it or not is up to luck.

1. The pay is too low.
But how much do you get paid not going there? I think about that a lot, especially when I get the opportunity to cover a shift. I can make $0.00 sitting at home or like $50 or $60 or whatnot going to work for a few hours.
2. The hours are too long.
So make them shorter. For a part time employee, you should not work much more than 30 hours a week for benefit reasons, and at many places, you can say like "max me out at 15 hours, or 20 hours or something. You don't have to work 8 or 10 hour shifts, my shifts are often only 4-5 hours long.
3. I want to avoid legal liability. (If I start a business)
Can you elaborate a bit on this? If you're afraid of getting in legal trouble, don't open a business. But if you want to open a business, don't let that stop you. Just make sure you follow the correct steps in doing so, and you won't have the issue. Get proper licenses and training and whatnot.
4. I don't have time
So make time. I go to school (uni/college) full time, taking more classes than they typically allow per semester, and I work as many hours as I'm legally allowed by my employer, while managing to sleep a few hours tonight, keep good grades, and have a social life. What do you do with your time that you couldn't spare like a few hours of your day? Maybe it means you can't play video games or something for a day, but you'll make money to get them when you do have the time.
5. I don't wanna be overworked.
See number 2. You can cap your hours.
I strongly recommend you reconsider. You can't just sit around at home the rest of your life. How will you afford food? A family? Recreation? Life? You have to do something, you will have a hard time getting aywhere without an income, it's a fact of life.

If you are surrounded only by people who hate their jobs, I understand its not a welcomming thought to start working. I consider free time very important too. And there cant be much left if we work our ass off.
But how about finding something you are really interested in. A job you look foreward to getting back too. You must have some ideas. I dont think its easy to live without money. Free time must become very long and boring without them

1. Get an education then or get a low paying job u can get promoted in so pay will increase.
2. Find a job with a reasonable amount of hours. Work part time if you have to
3. You can't avoid legal liability when you start a business. It's part of starting one and it's there to stop ppl that start businesses from scamming their customers/to give the customers rights in relation to the business owners. As long as you do nothing illegal legal liability won't hurt you though.
4.If you're referring to what we in Holland call 'bijbaantjes' then I understand. If you're referring to getting a career-what are you doing with ur time? Is it something that will pay your bills for you?
5. Overwork occurs and it sucks, that's true. Yet there are reasonable jobs where overwork doesn't occur very often. It shouldn't be a reason to not look for a job

1. I don't wanna waste my time going to school, and any amount of pay, even if it's 1,000,000 dollars an hour, won't cut it for me.
2. Even one second is too long.
3. What I meant by "legal liability" is I don't wanna be responsible for any massive collateral damage caused to somebody because one of my products malfunctioned.
4. I seriously don't have any time for a job, because I need to do more important stuff like leveling up my Pokemon or upgrading my armor. (Though I'm sure you'll disagree.)
5. Everybody is overworked. Any amount of work at all that isn't fun is being overworked.

I felt that for many years my friend. Life sucks, but you will meet someone, someone who will, no matter what be there for you. Work does suck though, but meh, you will grow and so will your options. Better pay, less hours, etc. It all comes in time. Just go through with it. As much as it sucks, the rewards are the best thing at the end of the day.

When people say this generation is screwed, this exact comment is what they need as proof. People above have tried to not be insulting, but quite honestly I don't care if I am or not. You're being really stupid. Obviously you aren't serious, and if you are, call the Guinness Book of Records, because YOU sir, just took the top prize for "World's Dumbest Person," and who knows, with any luck it comes with some prize money.
In the mean time, get out there and work hard. I go to university full time, take 24 credits worth of class, work 2 jobs, have a social life and keep a 4.0.
Work. Hard.
One last thing, being a girl, I'd never date a guy who was remotely serious about saying what you've said. I don't mind providing for myself, but I'm not going to provide for somebody else to sit around and play video games

Honestly, I loathed the idea of getting a job. But hey, a car or college tuition isn't going to pay for itself. Even on minimum wage (in my county it's $9/hr), it adds up pretty fast - working an average month at Jamba Juice I could earn around $400, which is certainly more than I've ever gotten in allowance.
Work can also be fun if you choose the right place surrounded by the right people. Sure, if you're in the food industry the "rushes" can be the most stressful part of your day (we got slammed today and I felt like throwing the blender on the floor and running out of the store ahah), but during the quieter times when I'm just chilling with my coworkers while I clean the lobby it's actually quite nice and a lot better than sitting at home doing nothing like I normally would be :)

I get the thought of working and living on your own is intimidating, but this is just an irresponsible thought and I highly doubt you'll go through with it.
1. Low pay is better than no pay.
2. If you're unwilling to work hard, then you don't deserve the money anyway.
3. So don't start a business, that takes even more money and commitment anyway.
4. What are you doing that takes up so much time that you can't even work once your out of school?
5. No one wants to, but we also don't want to starve or freeze to death because we couldn't afford food or shelter.

Well, to begin with, it won't be my problem anymore if my family and friends are sad, because I'll be dead. Besides, if they're sad because I'm dead, then they're a bunch of crybabies. Second, how am I being lazy? Just because I don't want to literally be worked to death like a death camp inmate during WWII? Finally, I've already tried counseling. Didn't work. Not that I'm surprised, because like I've said a few times before, I can't be broken. The real question is, why should I not kill myself if life is so imperfect?

Because you should start thinking about other people for once besides urself. Ur friends and family will cry not because their crybabies, but because they LOVE you! U have no right to kill yourself and not care about how it will affect others.
As for being worked like a death camp inmate-NO! those people had very little food, were whipped and beaten brutally and faced imminent death at any moment by Nazis. they had less rights than pigs. These days there are maximum working hours, laws, workers unions (unless you live in China or a country like that in which case I'd advise you to not work at all and you'd be right). Compared to detah camp inmates ur a frickin prince.
As for counseling breaking you, how will counseling BREAK you? It's supposed to help you. I'm sorry that it didn't help you though but that stuff happens :(
As for why you shouldn't kill urself due to the imperfectness of life: because that's the pussy way out and we're men so we don't do that. It takes strength to accept life's terribleness and remain alive in it. Suicide shuld only be an option if you have a terminal disease/every waking moment is hell. If that were the case I pity you and apologize for being harsh to u in these posts. If not, suck it up cowboy.

Here we go again...
First of all, MY family is being selfish by trying to force me to live. Besides, they're insane to love a physically hideous monster like ME. Besides, I think that everybody should have a right to kill themselves if they want.
Second, I think I have it worse than death camp inmates. I rarely ever get food. I would MUCH rather get beaten or whipped than be grounded. Because at least it lasts only 10 minutes rather than a whole month! Besides, being dead is better than being homeless for the rest of your life.
Third, counselers are evil sadists that try to brainwash me and other people into being slaves for the government, and thinking that life is worth living. (Which it isn't!)
Finally, I think that people who are afraid to die are the cowards, because it takes a lot of bravery to stare at death. Also, every moment for me IS a living hell!! (Though I'm pretty sure you'll disagree.)
P.S. I'm sick of people thinking I'm a cowboy just because I'm from Arkansas! I'm not a cowboy!!

The reason I am sending all these posts is because, firstly, you need to learn a bit more about life and bravery. Counselers want to HELP you, not turn you into a governmental slave unless they are messed up. And death doesn't take bravery because death is definite and over. Death is certainty. Life is uncertainty, fear, pleasure, pain and hope and thus it takes bravery to live it.
I realize you may be pissed at me for constantly posting but for some reason I dislike people killing themselves when they have so much chance to improve their lives and live like you seem to do. I don't care if it's selfish: it's how I, and some other VTF'ers I hope, feel
As for calling you a cowboy, my apologies. I didn't know you were so against that.

Have a nice day man.
1. So you're saying that all counselors are messed up? I guess that's one way of putting it...
2. Death will ensure that I won't ever have to tolerate any bull-sh** ever again, and is also takes away any overly challenging liability.
3. I'm not mad at you for posting. It's fine. I just feel VERY STRONGLY about my opinion of life not being worth living. And yes, for some odd reason, people want me to stay alive, despite me doing nothing beneficial to them. I guess they're evil sadists, I dunno.
4. "Have a nice day man." Unfortunately, that's not possible, because every day that I'm alive is a bad day.
