View Full Version : Loosing confidence ...

Hello guys,

It's probably the wrong category for this topic, and I'm sorry, but I couldn't really find one that suits. :(
My problem is mainly about Karate: I train for a few months (I think it's about 6,7 or 8). I really liked it at the beginning. I was confident, and the atmosphere was perfect.
This year everything's getting worse though. I didn't practice for a month cause I was sick, and I feel like I don't remember stuff... Normally, I gained my yellow belt after training last year, but I see that the teacher doesn't think I'm ready, and I wouldn't accept the belt even if he gave it to me.
I feel like I completely suck, like everyone is much better than me. And the teacher put me in a small group with all the beginners that don't know anything. (This wasn't nice of him, I agree. My mum and friends say that I had to improve something, but I'm doing great). Some people tell me that i'm really good, but I feel like they do just to boost my confidence up.
The people in the group are still the same (it's exactly the same thing). It's just that there are green, blue, black belts and beginners such as white/yellow and some orange. (Well, orange isn't truly beginners). It's just that we stretch and warm up all together, and work separately.
This pisses me off.
I feel like I should stop, because I will never progress, and will continue to suck. Maybe I'm just not made for it? At the same time I notice the changes in my daily behavior, movements due to karate. And my reflexes, attention are more precise and fixed.
What can I do to really boost my motivation up? And stay confident?

Thanks guys. :)

It's okay to feel like you've come to a stopping point; like everyone is gettting ahead and you can't keep up or learn anything new.

I've had this with piano lots of times. The truth is, you just gotta work EXTRA hard, and then you'll suddenly regain all the progress that you don't now.

Hope that helped. :)

If you stop - you will never progress. BUT you have already seen benefits so carry on maybe you could look for another karate club.

Yeah, I already thought about another club, but this one suits me and my family the most. The past few years, my mum and sister used to take me everywhere because it was really far, and karate is on the same street as I live on.
And it's just easier.

Ok - well get motivated and just set sights on your first belt -

Yeah... well, I know that. But how am I supposed to do that? It's not easy to suddenly get motivated after feeling so bad for a while! :/

you get motivated by setting a goal for yourself. give your self something very specific to work towards. don't just say I want to get better. say (for starters) I want to work to where I was before I got sick. then say I want to be here. if you give yourself a specific goal, you can actually see the progress being made and that will help boost your confidence

Do things in your pace. Don't give up, we all do things at different speeds. Don't become a quitter, it's easy to give up. Take breaks if you have to, keep practicing.

That was far one of the best answers, that really explained it well. Thanks :)
