This seems like an appropriate place to post this but I want to hear people's opinions on Internet Surveillance and should we have the right to privacy. I'm aware people will say if you got nothing to hide then why worry but there also hits a point where you do have a right to privacy.
I'm sure someone has posted this before but I don't want to bump any forums.
My questions are the following,
1, What is your opinion on Internet Surveillance?
2, Do you believe that there should be some sort of oversight over the information that's collected through Internet Surveillance?
3, Do you believe you should have the right to privacy?

1. In my opinion I don't really mind it, but it is kinda weird. I don't really like the NSA to be spying on me. I mean, what if its personal(I know the nothing to hide, don't worry stuff) and someone just happens to know everything going on? It's strange
2. To a point yes! There's many criminals out there who need to be monitored. But I don't see how that gives the government a right to just spy on us for no reason.
3. Yes, we all should. The government wonders why we're all pissed? It's because they are trying to be our parents and control us when we don't need to be. It's similar to this phrase..."when guns are outlawed..only outlaws will have guns"......the government is fucking this world up.

I agree in some extent as being Canadian we have our own spying agency called CSEC (Communications Security Establishment Canada) they are
surveilling Canadians. Many Political Parties are calling on oversight of the department but the party that's currently in power is pretty much denying everything and most likely using it for political purposes. If your against their party then they'll use it as a political advantage in my opinion. Either way I believe there should be oversight ad the Supreme Court of Canada should be the one to be in oversight of it, because they do decide what's constitutional and what's not. But that's my opinion anyways but thanks for replying with your opinion :)

1, What is your opinion on Internet Surveillance?
It's not what people think it is. They only use it when they have to when they feel someone is doing something illegal.
2, Do you believe that there should be some sort of oversight over the information that's collected through Internet Surveillance?
If the situation calls for it, yes.
3, Do you believe you should have the right to privacy?
Internet and privacy don't really go together in my opinion. Yeah there are ways to protect your personal information while online, but by only revealing the city you live in already erases any privacy you might have online.

If this is related to the NSA, I wonder why people were so surprised. ISPs already were doing that for ages.
1) What is your opinion on Internet Surveillance?
As cool as the idea is, the use of proxies/hidden networks really hinders the process. Who you're really looking for isn't that dumb.
2) Do you believe that there should be some sort of oversight over the information that's collected through Internet Surveillance?
How is it surveillance if it isn't, well, under surveillance. Of course, seems pointless to collect so much data to do absolutely nothing with it. Are you talking about monitoring the system that monitors our data? If you're that worried that the data is in wrong hands, you might be worried that the monitors monitoring data monitors are also corrupt. It's cyclic.
3) Do you believe you should have the right to privacy?
I don't see why privacy is so valued in the first place. Ideally, all the information is being processed by a 3rd party that has nothing to do with your life, they couldn't give a less of a fuck on how you write your love letters or whatever. They're just looking for bad guys.

While I disagree with it, I don't believe it is as rampant as people seem to think it is. It's almost physically impossible to actually do what people like Snowden claim the NSA actually does. There are on average 2.4 million Google searches per minute. If even 0.001% of those are tag-able searches for further research that's 2400. Per second. The system, if it even exists, would likely search for patterns rather than searches, which means that the NSA isn't going to see that Gay-porn site you like to look at, or that weird fetish you have. It's not good that it's become the prescient to do it, but it's very inconsequential in the long run.

"National security" is an oxymoron as long as we've got a neoliberal occupation government that likes its borders as porous as possible. we already know it would make more sense to enact a travel/entry blanket ban on countries that are known for harboring Islamic terrorists along with heavily militarization of our borders. it's win-win: tears of outrage from Mother Jones subscribers and big business owners, AND no need for a trillion dollar surveillance program.
lmao not gonna happen so just smile and wave whenever your webcam is on I guess
