Well they feel different, if you're "free balling" you're not wearing any underwear and you can feel the texture of the basketball shorts

Wearing boxers is having room in your underwear for your genital area to "breathe" per say , vent is another word for it, you basically give your genitals room to where they're not all pulled up and cramped together ( trying not to be graphic )

Similar feeling, but not the same. Boxers would be made out of a soft material so it doesnt scratch against your dick, but gym shorts might not feel too good, or it will give you a bonar hahah
