View Full Version : why wear underwear under longer dresses?

ok girls, i get the point of wearing underwear under pants for sanitary, protection, and comfort reasons. I understand with shorter skirts too. I guess I'm just not sure why anybody would need to wear it under longer dresses. Longer dresses don't touch that area, so there's no sanitary reason. Comfort doesn't really seem to be a factor, and neither does protection. Upskirts shouldn't be a problem with a longer dress. So, I'm just curious, are there really any compelling reasons why someone should wear underwear under longer dresses?

I'd say it's a matter of preference, I guess.

I personally would be EXTREMELY uncomfortable with it.

Completely agreed. It doesn't matter if I was wearing a long dress, a skirt, jeans, or whatever...I would be a bit uncomfortable without wearing underwear.

You would be uncomfortable with it or without it?

Yes, its all preference. Some girls dont wear panty even when wearing a short dress. I dont wear any when wearing jeans.

Preference I suppose. Some people are so used to wearing underwear that it would be just so weird going commando.

See I would do it for hygiene reasons anyway, never bee too careful! Plus as other girls have said, I'd be happier with underwear.

I'm no woman but here in Houston the women with the most to show wear the tightest dresses with no bra or underwear so the result is an earthquake of flesh and showy bits.

Same as most of you girls, to me it doesn't feel right to walk around without underwear

Thanks for the answers everybody. I guess it really is mostly a preference thing. I was never ok going without underwear until I decided to try it one day in a long dress. I figured nobody could see, no one would know. I guess I don't really see the point in it now.

Yeah a preference thing and also maybe a dare thing to lol I know its like a thrill not wearing any under a long dress or skirt because nobody else knows. But I like wearing them to because they make me feel comfy and maybe I'm weird but I feel cute or sexy in some of my panties haha.

I think it's all personal preference. I often do not with dresses and skirts.

Sorry if I'm being perverted, but so that way when a strong wind is blowing and a girls skirt/dress blows up, I'll be happy. :whoops:

I agree, it's a preference thing. I see no reason why you couldn't, but I personally would feel too exposed. I usually wear shorts or leggings or something under dresses anyways.

...Isn't your 'down there' area uncomfortable rubbing against the scratchy jeans material? Just wondering :confused:

I know panties would help keep your pants clean, but how do they really help under a long dress? That's the point of my question. Under a long dress, underwear seems kinda pointless, except for personal choice.

Yeah, I would so much rather go commando under a dress than jeans.

I would feel uncomfortable without underwear

Is the comfort level b/c of what someone else might see? What makes you uncomfortable with it?

I guess it's just a matter of preference and other stuff but I'd wear underwear, anyway, for hygiene reasons, comfort and in case anything weird happens. lol. The only time that I don't wear underwear is when I go swimming. haha

As far as hygiene or sanitary reasons, soccerbeth, there is no reason you would need to wear panties under a long dress as long as it is not that time of month. If it is very long, then upskirts should not be a problem. So the only reason would be for comfort.

I would be very uncomfortable without underware with anything. I was told one time always wear underwear at all times in case your in a accident.

I am just seeing this thread now and honestly sometimes this website shocks me... Underwear is important, okay? Your vagina is not a trendy croptop, protect that thing with your life, underwear protects it from airborn stuff and what if you happened to sit in something? What if it rains? Like this is not something I could ever do, like what if it's cold? There are so many reasons this isn't okay, but hey you wanna do it then do it. I just think it deserves a little more respect and protection, and like what if it's a loose maxi and you have a Marilyn moment? Ugh thus is just baffling to me. WHAT IF YOU HAVE SCHOOL AND HAVE TO CHANGE FOR GYM? Too many variables for this to be okay...

" protect that thing with your life!" that made me literally lol.

I agree with you. You wouldnt catch me without panties, or something covering. like a leo, or swimsuit. because wth?? What if?!! plus i dont think i could be comfortable sitting in a skirt knowing im all commando.

But really, i dont think a girls vagina is that suseptible to things like air particals and all that. I mean, Ive gone swimming in dirty creeks and rivers and the ocean and sat directly in sand when i was like 3 yrs old completely naked, or even just got sand in my bottoms anytime i go into the ocean without any "complications". Plus underware as we know it wasnt worn centuries ago. and some native tribes in deep parts of africa or the amazon never been to a victoria secret. (sad i know!) One of my friends mom claimed the pubic hair protected the vagina from "debris" and shaving would cause us health problems. Like, really? Then why do boys have hair too? or arm pit hair? It sounds good and logical i guess but im not so sure it's really all THAT vulnerable.

Nothings going to just fly up in there, underwear really doesn't do much other than keep anyone from seeing it during certain moments.

^^ this. Many obgyns suggest that you let your lady bits air out whenever possible. It's actually healthy to go commando in bed or in dresses, so they say. Now, I wouldn't do it in a loose flowy maxi if it were a windy day, but when it's not windy and/or with the right dress, I don't have a problem doing it. It's not like I'm gonna just sit in a pile of ebola or have something crawl up in there.

I personally wear dance shorts over my underwear if I'm wearing a skirt or a dress. Even longer ones. However, the exception is for very tight dresses. Either I have one pair of boyshorts that aren't too bad with underwear lines or I have a *shudder* seamless thong that works very well for the few things I own that are really tight. But I don't really like tight things anyway.

Also, I find underwear adds more shape to my butt so there's that. It's both comfort and my slightly vain personal appearance preferences.

I've only worn a long dress without underwear once but I was like seven and actually just forgot to put underwear on. Again, I was seven. Or possibly younger.

Actually, the only reason why most of us are uncomfortable with our lady bits is internalized misogyny brought upon by men who have told women for centuries to cover themselves up. It's actually healthy to go "commando" more often than not but most of us are simply not comfortable with it because that's how we were raised and how our parents were raised. Your vagina is actually remarkably resilient, self-cleaning, and the odds of something actually getting all the way up there are pretty slim, really.

Although your comment about the cold is totally legit. There's the phrase "freezing my ass off" and my hoo-ha is totally applicable to that too.

Whether the dress is long or shirt, there are still possibilities for slips and it's better to be wearing something underneath than to show it all off if it does occur.

The only reason for clothing is to keep you warm really.
Society says you have to wear clothes though.
