Yes - I do it. I like the sound, I think it's cool, and it automatically pop my knuckles when I'm nervous. My toes get popped a lot too.
People have told me that can give you arthritis, but other people have told me it doesn't...
Does anyone really know if it has any ill side effects?

Although, some articles and websites claim that knuckle cracking and other joint cracking may cause soft tissue damage, but they really don't make a big deal about it. It looks like there's nothing to be worried about.
Some people (and me) crack their knuckles and joints because they are already feeling pain in their joints
I don't do it as a habit except when I do things that involve my hands anyway!

Well I play violin (As well as a little guitar), and violin's harder for the reason of no frets and I've been doin' fine with it so probably nothing will ever happen that makes playin guitar harder.

As far as I know when you 'pop' your knuckles you are popping a tiny air pocket that was trapped in the specific joint you wish to pop. No side affects.

Wow! It's a lot more common than I thought!
Actually, it's not air pockets in your joints, it's that there is synopial fluid in your joints, and when you push your finger the space where the synopial fluid is stored becomes larger, and this creates lower air pressure, which causes bubbles to form which eventually pop.

One possible side effect is someone annoyed enough by your knuckle-cracking to crack his or her knuckles on your face. :P

My mom said something like that once. I asked my mom if anything bad happens when yoou crack your knuckles, and shes aid you could die. I was all like, "What? How?" And she said, "Someone could get so annoyed that they shoot you!"
Lol, she hates it.
