View Full Version : Long hair on guys?

Okay, here's the deal. I'm an African American male and I want to start growing my hair. I've already started for the past few months and I just gotten my hair texturized. Now, here's the issue. Why do so many people think that when wants or has long hair, (especially in the Black community) it means he is feminine, trying to be a girl, will look like a girl, or is ignoring his race and heritage? I fought tooth and nail to try and get my mother to agree that I should be able to have longer hair.
I want to be able to pull my hair back into ponytails and pufftails. (this takes time I know). But instead of a "that'll take a while to grow," or a, "long hair wouldn't work for you," she like most of my told family says, "why are you trying to be a woman? Only females have long hair. And you are not White. You will look like a girl with longer hair." I've been wearing near-fades all of my life. And I really admire longer hair on guys and despite my race I want it too. Also I have Native American heritage and once my hair was texturized now I look very Native American... but besides the point.
Do you think guys should be able to have long hair without shame? Do you think it should be acceptable to have longer or long hair as a guy? I get some look terrible in it and some don't like long-haired guys. I get that, but can we quit stigmatizing it?
And please forgive my typo in the poll... Oh how'd I miss that?
AND please, if you have your hair long or processed in any way can I know your hair type? Thanks.

[WARNING, EXTREME SARCASM] Of corse you can't have long hair if your black, that'd be aweful!
Seriously though, race should have NOTHING to do with it, if it's what you want to do, and it's how you feel comfortable, go for it. Don't let other people dictate your life because THEY think something, be your own person.

I totally think guys should be able to have longer hair!
Native guys don't get questioned around here at all... Like they have beautiful hair, and they take pride in it. Is it just where you're at?
Anyways, it's entirely possible to be masculine with long hair, and even masculinity aside, it shouldn't matter. I say go for it.

I had long hair myself! It's kinda messy to handle, but the results are fun!
I find it weird that hair is associated with femininity. Oh well, standards.
Good luck in growing it out!
Edit: I voted that I have long hair even though I didn't, but because I had and could not keep it (college hazing) until today.

Native? And I have super curly hair, so it would cost money for a true perm. (Sigh) Mother dearest is too traditional. I'm still under my mother's roof. I feel more neutral to gender but not to my sex. I kinda want those long straight ponytails many Native American guys wear. I am Black but I tell my mom "Black is a rainbow. I am literally everything and am so Native American from your parents that we are probably to be considered mixed."

How is your natural hair?

Ah yeah, I feel you there. I used to have the nice, long straight hair (in essence, a female version of said Native American ponytails. That's where I got my hair. ) I gotta warn you though, it's a pain to keep up...

Don't care what other people say, if you care than they have already won.
Do what you want with your hair.Long hair isn't feminine, when people don't like something they say things like that.

I'm not gonna lie, you might experience hate from people because we always hate and pick at things we don't understand and see as unique. There could be trouble as far as working because people don't always accept long hair on guys when they are are working. People are jerks sometimes, just ignore them and worry about yourself. It's your body and as long as you are happy that should be all that matters. But if this is something that you want to do, go for it.
All of us conform in one way or the other and we take cultures and fashions from races that are not our own all the time. Don't worry about them. You do your thing, and that's all that matters.

I know a lot of African American or mixed race guys with longer or long hair, on some it looks attractive on some it looks awful...but well everyone should do what they feel happy with...I have never heard someone saying they find long hair on a black guy more effeminate than on a white guy...so yeah the black community I life in doesn't have a special opinion on that...
I sometimes dye my hair...it's not really black or Brown but kinda reddish so I dye it either dark or bleach it but I never do anything to get rid off my curlsor grow it longer than a few inches cuz I look like a 12 year old girl even with short hair...
You should wear your hair they way it feels right for you and not care about other people's opinions.

What can I say? I'm not attracted to guys with long hair, (TBH it's kind of a turn off) but still, I don't mind guys having long hair, they should do what makes them happy.

I've always had long hair, varying from very long to medium and I like it. I think almost eveyerone looks better with natural longer hair. Just looks more natural to me

As embarassing as it is, that's probably the picture with my hair at its longest.
Images are worth a thousand words, so here they are! I grew out my hair for three years, starting basically from zero. Never cut.

I used to have longish hair whn I was skinny...Whn I started to get a little chubby my GF insisted on a short crop...It immidiately made my face look bigger and uncovered my newly chuby cheek.....but I stuck with it (now for 6mo).But now many distant frnds cannot recognize new plumpy me at all with short hair.....This avoids embarrasing encounters where they notice the fatter me and comments about how skinny I used to be etc...

I had hair that went past my shoulders for a while, I liked it and was told it looked good. I think if you can pull it off well then it looks awesome. But not everybody wears it well, styles it well, or looks good with it.

As long as it looks good, but then 'good' varies from person to person I don't see any reason why anybody shouldn't have long hair.
