There were rumors that the new ipod touch 6 gen was supposed to be coming out today (october 1st) ,but i looked on the apple website and can still only find the 5 gen. any clues as to when they'll be available?

Thats exactly why it's called a rumor. It might might be true, it might not be. Usually apple and electronic stores announce things like that and have a countdown and stuff so people can camp out if they want to or blah blah. I'm not an apple fan but I'm just speaking generally. I don't know when it will be out but it should be soon. They are always coming out with new models.

Good chance that Apple will abolish the iPod, it has no place in the market anymore, as far as I'm concerned it a dead project, that way more people will but the more expesive, ergo more profitable iPhone.
And are you really desperate to have the latest iPod, whats wrong witht he 5th gen or the 4th? Both are still great devices....well...the 4th was....iOS 7 sicks dick.

Im not desperate, but i want to buy a new one since mine took a bath. If i can buy a 6, why would i buy a 5?

Honestly, I don't see the point in them. Cellphones + SD cards can hold almost the same amount of music and they're just one device.

yeah iPods are redundant now that literally everyone has a smartphone. really the only difference between an iPod Touch and an iPhone is a SIM slot and a cellular modem chip (they're both equally gay)

Except you'll pay for an ipod once, where you keep paying the smartphone fee monthly. The only advantage is using a smartphone out of wifi. Even then you pay if you go over your data.

The advantage to having both would be that you could have portable music with you while not being tied to your phone, which is kind of cool for me since I would religiously check it even while working out or hiking or whatever since I use it for music.
The class ipod is actually officially done for, no longer in production sadly. Which for music junkies im sure is a huge let down since you can have tens of thousands of songs on the.
I recently ditched my iPhone since I didn't care for the 6 and got an S5 and I've been using my old phone for music until I decide if I want an iPod touch or just a nano, 16gb for just music will hold my mediocre music library just fine.
So in short it's definitely convenient having all your media on your phone but it's also nice to leave it be and still have an MP3 player when you want music without lugging the phone around :)

I'm curious to see if they release a new or at least updated version of any kind on the 16th at their event before I decide what iPod model I want to buy. If they release a new touch model I'll probably buy one. If not I think I'll keep it simple with a nano :)

There's not enough profit to keep iPods going anymore. The iPhones are huge for them. And now the whole "I can't fit my music on my iPhone" argument doesn't work anymore with the 128gb iPhones. If you can fill that, you have a problem. Seriously.
