Yes. You can't really be sure of someone's sexuality. Some people just don't feel comfortable in public or just coming out.

Have heard that some panic when asked if gay and deny it. Might happen even though he knows you are gay. Might be better to bring up in a conversation instead of just blurting out "are you gay?"

To be honest, I would just be careful. It's ok to be friends, but respect his sexuality just like you want him to accept yours. Yeah you can talk to him and get to know him more to see if he gay. If he is great, but if he isn't, don't go any further as far as friends. If you continue to lust and crush over him knowing he isn't like that, it could lead to further trouble. I wish you good luck anyways, and please keep us updated if you like.
