For my Basic College Skills class, we had to write a 250-600 word essay from one of the commonly used supplement topics found on the Common App. Here's my take on it:
Topic: Tell the reader about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Word Count: 432
In my experience, you can tell a lot about a person by the car they’re driving. An old, beat up Ford Escort may tell the story of a bustling commuter who doesn’t care if their car is not the most slightly, it’s their car and they love it unconditionally. Others drive opulent Mercedes S Class coupes that scream, “I’m rich and classy!” If there’s any car I’d buy to describe my personality, it would have to be a 2012 Toyota Camry SE. The Camry looks for a fun time while still sticking to it’s modest roots of being a midsize sedan.
It might not be the most luxurious choice of cars, but I don’t consider myself an overly luxurious person. I’m a pretty modest person when it comes to almost all qualities, and it stems down from the idea that I am not quick to judge people. You could be earning $400,000 a year or living in the streets – to me, the interaction between the other party and I is a much more fruitful experience.
Being modest doesn’t make me a boring person, though. Much like the exciting pep from the 2.5 liter engine, I enjoy the fast pace that life sometimes hurdles me through. While some cars (and their drivers) may struggle to maintain the high speeds of urban freeways, I can coast along quite comfortably. I also take initiative when I know I’m taking things too fast, and when I need to apply the break pedal on my commitments, I am proactive in talking to my teachers and peers about coming up with a solution that allows us all to rest easy.
Speaking of easy, the Camry has one of the softest suspensions of all the cars I’ve had the pleasure of driving. Like me, the suspension is pretty easy-going and glides right over the bumps in the road. Even when driving over a sharp bump, I may take the impact, but at the end of it all, I’m quick to recompose and move on with my life. This was key for when my parents split back in 2012 – while it was a devastating experience to go through, I was quick to realize that life moves on, and it’s not worth spending all my energy crying about it.
The result is a student who is modest in his values, enjoys the fast pace life sometimes has, is proactive in getting assistance when needed, and doesn’t let the small things crawl under his skin. If the Toyota Camry doesn’t represent those values in a car, then I don’t know what does.
