View Full Version : Too old to cut?

Hey guys. I took a VERY long hiatus from this site. I'm back looking at old posts of mine at the now very old age of 19.
I want to know if 19 is "too old" for self-harming? I did it mostly as a younger teen, 16-17. I know it sounds silly to ask, because there isn't an age to mental disorders and self-harm IS NOT strictly for younger teens. But I find it rare to find somebody over the age of 18 who cuts.
I'm older, and I haven't cut in nearly two years, but I still get the urge sometimes. It's hard. Sometimes, the only thing that has stopped me is the fact that:
1. I have no razors.
2. I am incredibly too busy to even take 10 minutes out of my day to cut.
Is there anyone on here who's older than 17 that self harms?

You're never too old to self-harm.

Self-harm is a coping mechanism. People hope that they will learn to cope better as they get older and should work toward doing so. But there are 40-year-olds that still self-harm. I kept doing so until 203 days ago so I'd have been 18 still.

Haha 19 is young. :P
Anyway I turn 21 in November and last night was the first time I cut in about 3 years (which inevitably brought me to start posting again on this forum because I spent a few of my teen years here). You're never too old to self harm, there are adults in their 30's, 40's, 50's and so on who self harm - it's not uncommon at all. Generally self harm is a coping method, because it gives us a temporary feeling of relief from what's causing us to be angry and distressed. Nobody is too old to develop depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc etc, therefore is no age limit on self harming.

I know a 58 year old guy who cutts, hes a cool guy, met him when ayt the local biker spot and he noticed my cuts and scars and we got talking about it, turns out he cut from the age of 14 and has been doing it his hole life, so no, your never to old to cut, admitedly it's less common as you get older, but it still happens.

I cut from the age of 12 to...well, adulthood. When I turned 18 I started to feel like I was too old to be doing it. I felt stupid and, of course, that only made me want to do it more. When I was 19 I decided it was time to join the Navy. I made it to MEPs and was sent home for my very badly scarred arms. I rode home with a girl who then asked me, "Aren't you too old for that emo BS?". Yeah, no. You're never too old for it. I stopped shortly after my 20th birthday. It is a struggle I can't get out of my head. I still hurt myself in other ways that won't scar me, though.
You'll never be too old for a mental disorder.
