A 15-year-old Quebec boy has died from injuries he sustained after being buried in a mountain of snow for over an hour Friday afternoon.
The boy was sliding with a friend near Thetford-Mines, Que. when he was swept into an open pit mine and buried in snow.
A desperate search and rescue by police, emergency workers and volunteers was stymied by difficult conditions but they managed to find the boy and initiate CPR.
He was taken to hospital and listed in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries.
The boy's name was not immediately released.
Thetford-Mines is a small town located about 100 kilometres south of Quebec City. The area is famous for its asbestos deposits.
