View Full Version : Turn off lights, benefit the Earth

You’re being invited to join the world and turn off your lights for an hour on Saturday, March 29.
Salmon Arm’s Kairos committee requested that city council endorse residents participating in Earth Hour, and council agreed.
Earth Hour, 8 to 9 p.m. March 29, is a World Wildlife Fund event that began as a single event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. It has grown to an international event that, this year, will stretch across six continents and in as many as 20 cities. The event is meant to raise awareness about climate change and to symbolize that, working together, the people of the world can make a difference in the fight against climate change.
In Sidney, it is estimated that 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses, including icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, turned off their lights for an hour. Energy consumption dropped 10 per cent for one hour, the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for a year.
Canadians cities who have signed onto this year’s Earth Hour include Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal.
You can sign up online as a supporter of the Global Earth Hour initiative at www.earthhour.org. For more information locally, contact Ray or Anne Morris at 833-5773.

I personally think that this is a great idea. That's what I'm doing next Saturday. I am a bit of an environmentalist myself (Don't have time or energy to do a lot of things like this, but I do things like these whenever I can).
And no, it is not a stupid idea. It wouldn't be a stupid idea if we turned off the lights for a whole day. Hell, the first week of April my whole family is doing a thing where we aren't going to use the car a single time in that whole week! The least some people could do is just kill the lights for an hour.

yea i agree guys.
If everybody in the world makes a difference for the least amount of time, then the world would be a lot different. For instance, if every single person who works with the same people carpooled in a van that holds 6 people, that would take 5 cars off the road per van. Considering how many people work together, that'd be a hell of a lot of cars
I'm the president of my school's environmental club so I'm not stupid about this kind of stuff :P
My vice principal told me about this earth hour thing, it sounds like a really fun idea and it would save a lot of energy. thanks cody!

Holy CRAP!
I almost always have the lights off- I drive my family crazy with it. Like when we're eating dinner my mom always leaves the kitchen light on so I run and turn it off, and the hall light is almost never on. Energy conservation, people! It's not even that difficult, especially for ONE WHOLE HOUR of your life.

I couldn't agree more, and I'm always turning stuff off, the computer screen, speakers, turn the Sky box off, turn the TV off properly, turn lights off, make sure the heating is never above 21C, make sure windows aren't left open and all that sorta stuff. It really annoys me that my step-dad leaves stuff on all the time.

That is completely ignorant, taking things for granted so much, that pisses me off so much.

Just another feel good measure for environmental wackos. lol

Hey, as someone who really cares about the environment, I take offense in that. Every little thing we can do to help is another step towards helping the earth survive through the wretched torture us humans have put it through. "Wacko", is not a word that should be people who care about the future of our planet. I am disgusted at some people, and ignorant people fall into that category.

It really didn't sound like a joke from my point of view, and didn't benefit the thread in any way.

Well I'm entitled to post my opinions regardless if you agree with them or find them beneficial or not. I am in no way seeking anyone's approval.

Yup any of us can post our own opinions on different matters. It's nice to see that you are deep into the save the earth thing but don't read that deep into it and try to pressure us.

No-one is pressuring anyone into anything, it's completely optional. But ignorant comments like that are just not needed.

Eh, I'm not quite like that, but if you call those extreme environmentalists "Wackos", you could call me an environmental wacko without the time to be wacko. Really, these people don't deserve the title "Wacko".
Maverick, I get now that you were joking and all, but all I saw was a "lol", not a "jk" or something of the sort, so that's why I kind of freaked out.

It's ok, it happens a lot :)
But I'm not calling you Wacko at all. I mean with so many ppl where I live constantly knocking at the door or trying to get us out of the car to sign some petition to stop global warming gets old lol

It's a pretty good idea Kodie. I'll probably forget to do it, but if I remember I'll do it. I'm not all that much into saving the environment, but hey it's great that some people are trying!
