So, recently I've had the thought of joining a martial arts/karate class. I've known a lot of people, including people in my family, who have done it and have lost a lot of weight from it, and that's one of the main reasons I want to do it. What i am wondering though, is if I should even do it. Cause i am not exactly skinny to say the least. Would it be too difficult for someone who weighs more? I really want to get healthier and I think this could be a fun way to do it.

It could be both fun and healthy. But hard too. Are you sure its karate you want?

Honestly, I am not sure what I want to do. Im just exploring different options on how to lose weight and get in shape. I know that the gym is obviously the first thing that comes to mind when someone wants to lose weight, but i feel like I would lose motivation for that really quick. I want to find something that would be fun.

Try a home fitness workout, MA is a good idea to loose weight as well. One thing is for sure, it will be hard on the first few weeks, you will experience a lot of sore. but you'll get use to it.

Maybe you should take a look at Aikido. You get in shape and flexible too and a calm state of mind.

Really depends on what you're practicing, like if it's some kinda taebo or crossfit shenanigans you'll get in shape, but it wouldn't really be martial arts. If it was a legit traditional martial art like aikido, judo, or karate from a reputable association you would get fit and learn to do some pretty flashy stuff as well as build confidence and find some spirituality to boot. Or you could go the 3rd way and do some kind of self defense stuff where you'd get fit and actually learn to defend yourself if that tickles your fancy, but it is hard to find a class that actually teaches self defense and not just how look like Jason Bourne. I've tried them all (except crossfit because I wouldn't be caught dead doing crossfit) and they all cater to the different person. I maintain that martial arts is the greatest thing in the goddamn world, but I've been doing it my entire life and may be a bit biased.

Maybe you should give it a go and see how you do - your aim is to shed weight and get fit great -

I practice Tang Soo Do for three years and I love it. I still go to karate very often. It helps build your self confidence and makes you stronger. I highly recommend you try it out. :)

It's not really about being skinny or not. It is more about discipline and motivation. There are different types of Martial Arts as well. There are some which are specifically for blocking and defense. There are some that just work on weapons and such. I didn't really go to lessons but I would watch videos online. It is mostly on you though. If you have the will you will find interest in it, and you will feel motivated about it.

I used to do karate when I was a younger kid, and enjoyed it a lot. I didn't do it for a very long time but I definitely think it was beneficial. You should give it a shot! It is good exercise, and I doubt you will be judged if you are overweight.
