View Full Version : philosophical questions?

steven
March 20th, 2008, 07:58 PM
okey... this could actually be turned into a game or sumink if your inventive, but i was thinking, post a question then the next person answers with what they believe? and then they post another philosophical question (philosophical = something we dont know)... so my questions is...

what happens to you when you die?

*Dissident*
March 21st, 2008, 01:02 AM
You are absorbed by the planet and become one with the planet.

Why do we buy things we dont need?

0=
March 21st, 2008, 01:18 AM
Because they make us "happy", but we need more all the time because you're empty if you're in imbalance with your surroundings.

Why is health unimportant to Americans?

theOperaGhost
March 21st, 2008, 01:23 AM
Because happiness is much more important.

Why do we have so much curiosity?

0=
March 21st, 2008, 01:44 AM
Nonsense, most of the people I know are only curious about pop culture and sports.

Does it really matter which puppet wins the presidential election?

Andrew56
March 21st, 2008, 10:23 AM
Not at all. Deciding between two people that will crash the country in two different directions because everyone has to oppose everyone else so strongly, is stupid.

How come guys that have a lot of sex are "awesome" "players" amongst their friends, and girls are "sluts"?

0=
March 21st, 2008, 03:55 PM
Because girls get pregnant and STDs more easily than guys and have to deal with the consequences, whereas a guy can have a one night stand and be done with it (usually).

Why doesn't the most powerful country in the world have the best education system?

steven
March 21st, 2008, 05:48 PM
because they spend too much money on their military force and not their education

what happens to you after you die?

Andrew56
March 21st, 2008, 05:53 PM
Because a low class cycle has started where children are brought up thinking they should get an education, but if they don't, they can just stick with a single job for life and work their way up to a grand living, without a chance of failure. If all the kids valued and understood education, a far superior system would soon follow.

And steven and I posted at about the same time so . . .

You go into eternal punishment, or eternal paradise, based on your rejection or acceptance of Jesus as a Saviour.

Start another thread if that ruffles to many feathers, this is not the place to discuss it. No counter points were meant to be posted here.

We can perceive some things (e.g., a bird) with each of our five senses. Other things (e.g., the wind) we can perceive with only some of our senses. And still other things (e.g., bacteria) we can perceive only by extending our senses (microscope). Do things exist that we are unable to perceive with our senses or any extension of our senses? What would be the nature of such things?

The many dimensions beyond the ones we experience. There are for more than just five.

Because they are popular and for some strange reason our society seems to believe that the more popular you are, the more rights you have,

March 22nd, 2008, 05:40 PM
ok then I'll post the next question.

When do you think the world will end?

steven
March 22nd, 2008, 06:10 PM
when the sun starts to die as stars expand when they begin to die, this will torch the earth

when you are asleep, do you actually dream or do you make it all up when you wake up...?

Sugaree
March 22nd, 2008, 06:12 PM
I really dream

Is it really the fact that we show emotion or is it our natural response to an issue

steven
March 22nd, 2008, 06:34 PM
we show emotion because we care, and we care because it is natural to us to think about what we want and like

if there was no living thing in an area, would time go on as it would if there was or would it skip straight to when an animal would be/go there?

*Dissident*
March 22nd, 2008, 06:38 PM
It happens, even if there isn't anything there. I mean, natural processes still happen even if there isnt anything living there.

Why doesn't anyone ever find any of the prophecies, such as Nostrodamus's and the Bible code prophecies, before a catastrophic event actually happens?(I watch the history channel a lot)

Serenity
March 22nd, 2008, 07:17 PM
Because people need to believe catastrophe is imminent in order to make efforts towards preventing it, which most people don't. People are too afraid to be afraid.

What is it about others' discomfort that amuses us so?

Sugaree
March 22nd, 2008, 07:38 PM
Because it's not happening to us and it makes us feel better.

Why must people always find sadness in everything

theOperaGhost

People think being overly happy is a bad thing.

Why is being ignorant cool?

Mzor203
March 22nd, 2008, 07:51 PM
Because when you don't pay attention to your worries, you don't seem to have any problems in life, which in turn makes it so it seems that everything in your life is easy and cool.

Why is it that a man who can rush into battle without fear of death become afraid the minute he steps up to the pedestal to give a speech?

theOperaGhost
March 22nd, 2008, 07:56 PM
Because men are better when it comes to action over words. Also it's more of an adrenaline rush.

Why don't men ask for directions? And why do women hate it so much?

You can never reach the edge of space.

Why do we care more about outer space than we do about our own planet?

steven

Why is some of the world in poverty when we have way 2 much food wasted? Couldn't we just share?

Andrew56
March 23rd, 2008, 01:23 PM
For the most part, because we're lazy. At the Easter church breakfast this morning, pounds upon pounds of unwanted food had been thrown away. If we filled our plates with our stomachs and not our eyes, we could save alot of food, and solve alot of hunger.

Hypocritically I ask, why are so many of the questions asked not philosophical in any way?

Serenity
March 23rd, 2008, 01:26 PM
Laziness again. Actually coming up with a good, in-depth, thought-provoking question requires effort.

What is it about big, shiny things that attracts people and makes them want to spend more and more money?

Andrew56
March 23rd, 2008, 01:50 PM
Big shiny things are hard to find in nature, and are uncommon amongst man made things as well. Therefore OBVIOUSLY they are a sign of high class, good taste, and ownership of copious amounts of greenbacks.

How did we end up paying for water?

Why must we really show emotion in a situation that doesn't call for it?

ThatCanadianGuy
March 23rd, 2008, 03:47 PM
The only answer could be that you DONT need to...

However... why are men expected to hide emotions (crying etc) that girls are encouraged to display "proudly".

Sugaree
March 23rd, 2008, 04:01 PM
Maybe because everyone has their own feelings on certain situations. Although I think we could be more responsive :P

Why must we always fight?

would it be possible to be able to travel through time and space?

Andrew56

No. Even observation would instantly cause a paradox and some crazy space time continuum crap would happen.

Why don't we just go ahead and drill for oil in our own country? Harming nature could be avoided, and if it wasn't, wouldn't you rather some penguins die and pay $0.50 for a gallon of gas, rather then thriving flightless birds and $3.50?

Sugaree
March 24th, 2008, 11:14 AM
Well, I believe that it's just mainly because they don't want to ravage the "beauty" of our country and just wreck another and of course this causes war in most cases I think.

Should we really care about current issues?

*Dissident*
March 24th, 2008, 10:26 PM
As an answer to the post before last: We consume 20 million barrels of oil per day. 8 of those are harvested on our own soil. We pretty much (with the exception of Alaska) drill to our capacity. I don't think oil is worth devestating the last real beautiful wilderness we have left in the US.

To answer the poster above me, yes, we should. If we didnt, then nothing would ever change. caring about others and their well being and how we (as a country) treat others is what makes us essentially human(e).

should religion have more or less influence in politics? or remain the same.

theOperaGhost
March 24th, 2008, 10:34 PM
Religion should have less influence. Especially if you're talking about international politics. Too many religions to get in the way of politics.

Is the Pope closer to God than a normal person?

Andrew56
March 25th, 2008, 09:11 AM
Some could argue that his relationship with God is stronger, but he is an equal among men as far as holiness goes.

I however, don't argue that point. I believe he is an equal spiritually and righteously to the average Catholic.

Why is there a lack of will power in most people?

Why must we always help other countries when they can offord to help themselves?

theOperaGhost

How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

Hauptmann Kauffman
March 25th, 2008, 11:44 PM
No-one will ever know; seriously, We willnever know, it depends on the Tootsie pop, the size of your toungue, what you would define as a lick, the amount of saliva you use, and you would have to make every lick exactly the same

How many hairs does a cow have on its back per sq. inch?

What is more important? Our comfort as humans or the survival of nature?

steven
March 26th, 2008, 07:31 PM
the survival of the nature is wayyy more important. if we continue as we are, improving our comfort, then the world will change the temperature will increase (global warming), which in turn. will increase the temperature at the polar ice-caps and will melt the ice, which has already started. this will raise the sea levels by a good 20m - 30m which will have DEVASTATING effects on low lying islands/coastal areas, this will kill thousands, if not millions of humans AND animals. if nature breaks down and gets worse, then the comfort of humans will decrease, this is a delicate balance, get too much of one then the other will decrease, wich in turn, will make the other one collapse which will make it spiral downwards.

What is the root of all evil?

PERSONALLY, I think religion doesnt help, though my official answer is there is no root. Evil is necessary

sentience (when we became a sentience species we earned the ability to choose)

As a species throughout history we've always been quick to adapt this atribute has allowed us to become the dominant species on earth
So why are we so slow in accepting, adapting, and conquering climate change?

Prince Jellyfish
March 26th, 2008, 08:13 PM
The root of all evil is good! For, I say, those who claim to be good are in all actuality bad!
Let me tell you a story.

In a great grassy field, there lives a herd of sheep and in the skies above them, large birds soar about. The sheep are preyed upon by the eagles causing the sheep to cry out, "Why? Why do you eat us? Why don't you try to eat grass instead? I could be just like you if I wanted, but instead I eat grass because eating others is evil!"

A large eagle heard this and replied, "What is evil about me? I simply wish to live my life! And the only way I may do that is by sustaining myself on a diet of flesh! What choice is it of my own?"

"Liar!" cried the sheep, "You speak lies! You are immoral and evil for feeding upon us! We are the victims of your cruelty."

The birds of the sky bared no ill will towards the sheep of the plain, as they were simply a a food source; however, the sheep were resentful towards the birds, the birds feed upon and therefore must be evil! The sheep believed that beyond this world, where they were prayed upon, they would be rewarded for their resignation of the mortal world. They believed that the birds of the sky would be punished eternally for feeding upon them and behaving as they did.

The birds could not change their ways, for it was not up to them as they were born into their superiority; likewise, the sheep were also wrong in claiming that they made the choice to only eat grass and be peaceful, as it was their nature! The sheep were not moral, they were simply born weaker, not born bad or evil, just born at a lower level. The hatred inside the hearts of the sheep towards the birds, creatures that only ate what they needed to to survive, makes them truly base and envious. However, the birds do not hate the sheep, they simply see them as below them; not inherently bad, but not of great worth; conversely, the sheep see themselves as good in their so-called rejection of the material world and the birds as completely evil because of there "immoral", albeit natural, ways.

So, who is truly good? As far as worth goes, it is the birds; for they are the superior creatures.
As far as a lack of baseness and inherent evil? ALSO THE BIRDS! The sheep had nothing but hatred in their hearts and they refused to acknowledge the true world around them, instead dwelling upon their hatred.

The Entertainer
March 26th, 2008, 08:16 PM
hmmm...but natural selection, the very thing that brought us here, is also a sort of natural evil too...

Hauptmann Kauffman
March 26th, 2008, 08:17 PM
Thee is no such thing as natural evil, humans define evil. W/out humans there is no evil

The Entertainer
March 26th, 2008, 08:19 PM
I take your point, but natural selection and evolution isnt all good, you have to admit. It goes against the average person's moral framework, surely?

Hauptmann Kauffman
March 26th, 2008, 08:21 PM
How is it not good? The best survives to move on, thats seems good to me. Who would want aplanet populated with sick beings?

The Entertainer
March 26th, 2008, 08:22 PM
well, it means that millions of species of animal, who themselves are not evil beings, have been made extinct. Take, for example, the meteor impact that destroyed the dinosaurs. That meteorite caused a whole lot of suffering, and natural selection weeded out those that couldnt survive....

Hauptmann Kauffman
March 26th, 2008, 08:29 PM
So what? They dont have the same intelligence as us, they arent equals, they would have died anyway. And that was randmom chance, not natural selection. What would the earth be like w/out NS? Who knows, it would be pretty screwed up though, the weak everywhere, surviving against all odds...

OK, here goes --- A very long time ago, here on earth, in a plains region, a group of apes learned to look over the plains to spot predators in an easier fashion by standing on their hind legs. They began walking upright, slowly developing. This revolutionised the way they had sex. Their bodies began to adapt to the new position. All the other apes were left in their normal form. They didnt evolve because they didnt have the brains to stand up. That simple

Why dont people do some research on the things they are against and deny so vehemently?
