So I've come to the conclusion that I really hate drinking, I hate smoking and I don't really enjoy smoking weed. When ever I've drank, smoked or smoked weed it's been purely for social purposes. No I didn't get pressured into it, it's just the social aspects of all of those are great. But I've found out that I'm a depressive drunk, which never really works to my advantage. So I decided that no recreational drugs are for me. They may be for you and I'm not saying that they are bad but I am saying I don't enjoy them. So a few weeks ago I made the decision to become straight edge. Straight edge originated from the punkrock/hardcore scene. The philosophy/life-choice that humans should have strength, pride, dignity, honor, and self respect; that they shouldn't engage in activities that are a disgrace to their minds and bodies. (such as ingesting and/or becoming addicted to harmful substances for fun, lying and/or being two-faced, and sharing your body sexually with another person when there isn't even a true emotional bond there). When I found out about this whole idea of straight edge I knew it was for me so I never plan on drinking or taking recreational drugs again.
I just wanted to write about it because it's been on my mind lately.
Your thoughts? Anyone else here straight edge?

There's no sense in "becoming" straight edge, or adopting it as some bizarre credo. If you don't want to drink, smoke, take drugs that's fine, you really don't need some rigid self-implicated statement of it to judge for you. The desire to be platonic towards substances would coe with it's own amount of contextual willpower.
Straight Edge is just an adjective to describe people who don't get much thrill out of psychoactive substances (Alcohol, Cannabis, etc). I would not use the term straight edge (or the value judgements of Alcohol/other use) to describe anyone based on, as you describe it philosophy/life-choice that humans should have strength, pride, dignity, honor, and self respect; that they shouldn't engage in activities that are a disgrace to their minds and bodies
A person's pride, dignity and self-respect should be considered completely unrelated to a person being 101% sober. That's a little bit offensive to those of us like myself who hold themselves in high regard but enjoy undertaking a bit of alcohol or weed, in the same way a religion considering a homosexual to be "completely morally bankrupt and evil" over one thing they see as a "flaw" is also a bit offensive.

Do what makes you happy. If it makes you feel good, do it. If it makes you feel pure, do it. Just don't hurt yourself.
I personally wouldn't touch drugs. They aren't for me and make me feel horrid. Alcohol...I am not much of a fan of (But I do drink wine. Ohhh my love for wine!). I drink when the social situation permits it but that is it.
Sex is sex.
Be yourself.

Just do whatever works for you. I personally like drinking and smoking weed but there's no sense in pressuring anyone into it or criticizing people who don't like it.

I just think it's worse when you have bad influences like siblings and cousins, and you feel peer pressure to do identical things that they do. I try my best to say no and I haven't had any problems so far. My main motivation is once you start, you can't quit. So it's best not to start in the first place. I think to each his own and we shouldn't judge. I just hope people do get help if they feel they are in a loop of some sort as it's very easy to get into the denial stage when you get involved with drugs and alcohol.

According to that I have no pride, dignity, honour, or self-respect for doing things I enjoy and hurt no one.
A nice sentiment for you maybe but sounds ridiculous from my end of things. Oh well, I'll continue to abuse my pride, dignity, honour, and self-respect in that case. Do what makes you happy. Just be careful how you start acting because of it. That whole philosophy has a slightly condescending "holier than thou" attitude which I don't personally like.
I agree completely with what Ryan said above.

Don't overthink it, do what you want

I don't do drugs, smoke, drink, etc.
Though I've never heard of "straight edge" until today.
I just looked it up and the wiki read "For some, this extends to refraining from engaging in promiscuous sex, following a vegetarian or vegan diet, and not using caffeine or prescription drugs."
I'm vegetarian, virgin (because I'm asexual), and I don't drink caffeine nor take any prescription drugs.
So I guess I'm extremely straight edge. :metal:
I should add though, that people who do do drugs etc are no less honorable than anyone who doesn't.

I think the term "straight edge" is kind of stupid. is it supposed to be a cooler-sounding word for "abstinent" or something? whatever. of course abstinence is a good thing and highly recommended, there's just no need for such a cringeworthy hip label.
