Does He Really Still Want To Be Best Friends?

My friend and I have been best friends for 5 years now. Back in January, he asked me to go out with him & I said "Yes!". We dated for a few months then one day after school, while hugging each other, he told me "I think it would be better if we were just best friends".

Does it mean anything that he said that when we broke up, or does he really still want to be best friends?

NOTE: We never fought at all during our relationship and NEVER had sex

could be many ways to look at this but maybe he was just not ready for a relationship

maybe he has met someone else but of course you can easily tell if he truly does want to be friends.
