My best friend/ex boyfriend/current crush (I know. Complicated, right?) and I were texting last night and today in one of our classes he told me he had trouble sleeping last night and had tried going to bed around 10 o'clock but ended up staying awake to text me. I told him he could've said he was going to bed, or wanted to go to bed and I would've said "Ok" and said "Good night!" as we've done in the past. All he said was "I know."
Is it possible he actually wanted to stay up and talk with me, or was he just being friendly to me?

he probably wanted to talk to you.
it's hard to answer these questions though because it's hard to come to a conclusion without knowing more about you and him and the situation.

OK, well, "We've been best friends for 5 years now. Back in January he asked me to go out with him. I said "Yes!" and told him he was my 1st boyfriend to which he said "I am honored!". We dated for a few months (which included a wonderful Valentine's Day in which he bought me beautiful red roses and took me skating). Then one day after school, while hugging each other, he told me "I think it would be better if we were just best friends".
Sometimes, I still feel like he still has feelings for me as well, due to the things he's done for me, and the way he acts around me (which according to many websites the things he does do mean he does has a crush on me)."

maybe he does. Have you ever asked him why he thinks you two would be better as just friends?

If he went through the trouble of staying up late just to text you, he clearly wanted to do so. I think you' better ask him why he thinks you two are better off as friends and if he might have a crush on you like you have on him, really you two seem to be friends with enough confidence to talk about something like that.

Woah. There's someone in the same complicated mess I am in.
As for the advice, what I've learned to do in my own complicated mess is to not really examine all the signs and just go with whatever you have. You should feel appreciative that he stayed up all night talking to you, not why he did so.
